Hemanta Mukherjee's tunes have been familiar to me since I was not even aware of the names and singers but can just go to sleep if someone sang to me. Dadu used to sing "Ranar chuteche tai jhoom jhoom ghonta bajche raate" and "Jeebonpurer pothik re bhai". 🧵 Image House was stuffed with Hemanta LP's and later cassettes. From his Rabindrasangeet to Bangla/Hindi film songs. Those who know me well, already knows my love for Uttam Kumar and Hemanta-Uttam pair was rock solid.

In September 1965, Utpal Dutt was arrested under the Preventive Detention Act. His article in the CPI's Bengali weekly organ Deshitaishi titled "Another side of struggle" was cited as seditious, coupled with banning the issue. 🧵
#UtpalDutt His 1964 play 'Samajtantrik Chal;' unmasked the hoarding practice of food grains and the black market of rice. He spent 7 months behind bars. Another time he was arrested for his other controversial play 'Teer' which portrayed the limitations of democracy.

Tintin turns 94 today. As a kid, my first introduction to Tintin was in Bengali through the magazine 'Anandamela'. In 1975, Nirendranath Chakraborty obtained permission to publish the comic strip in Bengali.

#Tintin 🧵 Since then no Bengalis ever really lost touch with this Belgian journalist. In fact, the first Indian translation of Tintin was in Bengali. Herge himself was quite surprised by the popularity of Tintin in Bengal.
