At the J6 rally on the Mall, protesters are outnumbered by reporters. Massive police presence: helicopter, police dogs, dump trucks lining 3rd St. The cost per protester would be interesting to work out. Lots of scenes like this- protester surrounded by reporters. Most argue —against reason and evidence — there was no violence on Jan 6.

What brings this day home to me is Dr. David Adelberg. He was a 31-year-old surgical intern at GWU on March 30, 1981.
1/x When Reagan got to the ER, doctors discovered he had been shot (it was a lucky strike -- the bullet ricocheted off the back quarter panel of the limo, flattened into a dime and hit Reagan edgewise under the left arm pit). Took some time to find the wound. 2/x

Did a cruise through Wayne County Canvassing Board member William Hartmann's public Facebook posts. He's a Republican, so not a surprise he is a BIG Trump supporter

I'll let you judge a sample of posts I pulled from 2010. He voted not to certify Wayne County's ballots. Here is link to his Facebook page: facebook.com/handidude2000/…

According to @bartongellman in Atlantic, the GOP/Trump is actually seeking a CONSTITUTIONAL way to keep Trump in power. In states with tight/disputed election results, repub-controlled legislatures could pick the slate of electors. It would be perfectly legal. 1/ They actually prepared for this in 2000 during the vote-counting disputes in Florida. 2/

Legal eagles question: Do prosecutors have an ethical obligation to drop a guilty plea case if they can't prosecute it any longer? This is about Flynn. It would be a terrible trial for DOJ (with all the politics, strzok, texts, notes, etc). 1/x I ask in this context. Let's say a guy pleaded guilty to gun possesssion. But the cop who arrested him was fired for doing something. And the DNA on the gun came back to someone else. Now, the dude pleaded guilty. There might even be security video of it. ...

Short thread on why it doesn't seem like FBI was setting up Flynn, and he pleaded guilty to the least-worse charge in a deal that was going to result in NO jail time. 1/x If the FBI was intent on setting up Flynn, Strzok made a major blunder in an interview with FBI agents in July 2017 (four months before Flynn pleaded guilty). He admitted he didn't think Flynn was lying at the time or that Flynn himself thought he was lying. This is important

Reagan formed a bond with his doctors and nurses -- those that saved his life and cared for him during his recovery after being shot. After his surgery, Reagan exchanged notes with the nurses. "Send me to LA where I can see the air I'm breathing," he joked. "All in all, I'd rather be in Phila.," he wrote in another.
Marissa Mize cared for Reagan in those dark hours, soothing him, boosting his confidence, telling him it was fine to be frightened.
A few months after the shooting, he tracked her down to thank her.

39 years ago today, President Reagan was shot and nearly killed at the Washington Hilton hotel. His life was saved by two forces: fast-acting Secret Service agents & highly trained docs/nurses. Some lessons I learned, mostly about ER medicine, in reporting my book about this day Reagan was shot by John W. Hinckley Jr. at 2:27 p.m. as he left the Hilton after giving a speech. Hinckley got off six shots in 1.7 seconds. He hit Jim Brady in the head, DC officer Thomas Delahanty in the back, USSS Agent Tim McCarthy in the abdomen and Reagan.

Just did a radio interview on @OnPointRadio with @davidfolkenflik about how my grandfather, Del Wilber Sr., stole signs as a coach for the White Sox in the 1955 season. It was rather effective (a thread with fun reference to Yogi Berra). So, my grandfather was a backup catcher for years withe Cardinals, Phillies, Red Sox. In 1955, he is hired by Marty Marion as a player/coach/bullpen catcher for the White Sox. And the team is struggling. They believe other teams are stealing signs.

BREAKING: Justice Dept. no longer recommends frm Nat Sec Advisor Michael Flynn be sentenced at low end of guildeline range, which would have meant no jail time. Citing his behavior and not accepting responsibility for his actions, prosecutors rec guideline sentence. 0-6 months Govt says Flynn "affirmatively" sought to undermine prosecution of one of his business associates, Bijan Rafiekian, who was convicted by a jury. Judge later threw out that conviction.

Just throwing out there. The IG blasts FBI for not disclosing in FISA that Page had once been an operational contact for another government agency (CIA). He was an asset from 2008 through 2013. But ... They should have disclosed this to DOJ lawyers and the FISA court, IG says. Kind of exculpatory evidence and went to state of mind. Maybe he was interacting with Ruskies to help U.S. or at least his intent was to help U.S., not spy on it, right?

FMR Acting AG Matthew Whitaker has NOT left the building. He is serving as a senior counselor in the office of Associate AG. There is no associate AG or acting associate AG. Principal Deputy Associate AG Jesse Panuccio remains in his post. He had served as acting associate AG. Panuccio's term as acting associate AG ran out after 210 days as prescribed by the Vacancies Reform Act. He had taken over from Rachel Brand, who abruptly quit to take a job at Walmart almost exactly a year ago. No word on a nominee for that slot.

BREAKING. senior DOJ official: Whitaker has not recused from Mueller probe. After extensive review by senior officials, he did not seek formal ruling from ethics office. BUT a senior doj ethics official said it was a "close call" and he should recuse in an "abundance of caution." In cases involving an appearance of conflict of interest -- versus a real conflict, like having once represented a defendant -- it is incumbent upon the official to seek an ethics recommendation.

Much focus has been placed on George H.W. Bush’s presidency. I’m going to shed a little light on a dramatic day as veep. It revealed his poise, a trait he would exhibit throughout his life.
Wrote book about that day rawhidedown.com & for @latimes: latimes.com/la-na-pol-bush… It was March 30, 1981, and Bush was politicking for Reagan in Texas. He unveiled a plaque at the Hotel Texas in Ft. Worth (where Kennedy stayed his last night alive). He then gave a speech to cattle raisers.

37 years ago today -- in 5 minutes actually -- President Reagan was shot and nearly killed. The would-be assassin's bullet lodged an inch from his heart. The 70-year-old president lost half of his blood. Going to drop some of what I learned while researching my book, Rawhide Down This is one of the most dramatic days in U.S. presidential history, and it revealed much about Reagan's character and courage. It established a strong bond between the president and the American people when they saw his mettle.

Bunch of people saying on Twitter that the explanation for the “insurance” text I cited in my story is bogus or meaningless or carrying their water. So I’m going to walk through why it makes sense and why it’s important. 1/x (get a script to read this) wsj.com/articles/in-fb… Peter Strzok, the FBI agent, and Lisa Page, the FBI lawyer, were having an affair. They were texting about everything (sharply critical of Bernie Sanders, Chelsea Clinton, Eric Holder, esp Trump). Even the Russia probe. They even joked about potential code names for it. 2/x
