In less than 200 days, Taiwanese will flock to the polls to elect a new President and Parliament. As an avid viewer of Taiwan’s political talk shows, I thought I’d compile a vocabulary list for anyone wanting to better understand the country’s political jargon.

Let’s dive in…🗳️ 三跤㧣（also 三腳督、三角堵）is a Taiwanese term (pronounced sann1-kha1-tu1) referring to a three-way-race, like in the upcoming 2024 election between Lai, Ko, and Hou. If Terry Gou were to join as an independent, it would become a four-way-race 四跤㧣.

According to CPPCC-delegate Zhou Xiaoping, the govt’s advisory body accepted his proposal calling on the Chinese govt to issue a kill-list of Taiwan independence proponents to be apprehended or killed in the event of a "special operation" against Taiwan. A thread 🧵 According to Zhou, the kill-list would include everyone obstructing the "unification of the motherland", incl. TV journalists, people responsible for school curricula, and those trying to "hollow out industry" (a hint at TSMC expanding its production in the US and Japan).

Remember when Germany’s @BMWK halted the acquisition of German wafer manufacturer #Siltronic by Taiwanese #GlobalWafers? During an award ceremony yesterday, GlobalWafers CEO Doris Hsu set the record strait re the BMWK’s hesitations: According to Hsu, 🇩🇪 authorities believed that selling to a company from 🇹🇼 would mean selling it to 🇨🇳 in the long term. They were not worried about "what if" but "when" Taiwan would become the next Hongkong. For Hsu, this was the 1st time nat sec concerns dominated a M&A plan.

Now that the backstory of Chiang Wan-an (#蔣萬安) has come under scrutiny once again, I thought I'd make a thread detailing some of the questions that have been raised with regard to his Chiang family pedigree. Buckle up! Chiang Wan-an was born Chang Wan-an in 1978. His father Chang Hsiao-yen (章孝嚴) claimed to be the son of late ROC president Chiang Ching-kuo (蔣經國) and successfully changed his surname to Chiang in 2005. How did he manage to do so?
