Tonight, I'll be livetweeting the Newcastle City Council meeting. After Issaquah, Redmond, and Kirkland before it, Newcastle is the next city to consider enacting tenant protections after recommended by the ARCH Executive Board earlier this year. Newcastle's proposal would include the 3 recommendations by ARCH, but also 1) provide people on fixed income the option to set their payment date, 2) disallow landlords from using a lack of SS number on impacting rental decisions, and 3) carve an exception for small landlords.

A nap &a call to the 'rents got me starting late today, but tonight's Bellevue City Council meeting should be a relatively easy affair. An appointment to the Human Services commission, a quarterly update on economic development, and an affordable housing donation from Amazon. Re: the affordable housing donation, city staff confirmed to me that Amazon has donated (not loaned) $2M towards the construction of Samma Senior Apartments in Bothell. However, money can't be accepted by ARCH directly, so it needs to go through Bellevue first.

Tonight's the last Bellevue City Council meeting of 2021, and it's going to be a busy one. Lots of ordinances on the agenda, related to East Main development, NW & NE Bellevue neighborhood plans, and discussions on how Council will elect its new mayor in January. Since Bellevue is a Council-Manager form of government, citizens don't directly elect Mayor. Rather, the 7 CMs choose a Mayor and Deputy Mayor amongst themselves every 2 years. The next vote will happen at the January 3rd meeting, so they'll be discussing the rules for that vote.

Holy shit I *am* actually invested in this game now, but do the ends of basketball games *always* take this long? Good shit with the smoke, @timbersarmy, you got a mention in the broadcast. Thank you

"Live" tweeting last Monday's Bellevue City Council meeting.

It was a bad one to miss, with CMs giving their thoughts on East Link bus restructures, permanent supportive housing best practices, and budget ordinances, so I thought I'd go back and cover it here. ImageImage 9 people were signed up for public comments, but 7 of them were on the same side (support/against) of the same topic, so by Council rules, only 3 of them will be allowed to speak.

Just got rejected for a transpo job that I was really eyeing and it's hitting me kinda hard. It was the first time I applied for something that really felt like it would be a career, and I was really excited at the prospect of making a positive difference in the world. I want to do good work. There's a lot of directions I can go in right now with my life (journalism, advocacy, environmental research, etc.), but it almost feels like a master of none situation where I don't have enough qualifications in any particular field to actually get hired.

Tonight's Bellevue City Council meeting is a packed one - testimony on mid-bi budget adjustments, discussion on an affordable housing LUCA, further decisions on the East Main station area, and an ordinance to comply with state law re: unrelated people living together. ImageImageImage I hear there's going to be people testifying in the budget hearing asking for more funding to implement the city's environmental stewardship initiative. As I & others have noted before, the city wants to reduce GHGs by 50% in a little over 8 years' time.

It's two weeks & one day before Election Day, and I'm covering tonight's Bellevue City Council meeting. Important discussions on the East Main LUCA, implementation of the Environmental Stewardship Initiative, and a preliminary timeline for mid-biennium budget discussions. ImageImage Tonight's East Main study session is because CMs were unable to come to consensus around FAR & height at the previous meeting. Tonight's meeting will seek to work out those details. Supposedly staff has met with CMs to iron out their concerns.

Prepping for tonight's Bellevue City Council meeting.

Two interesting topics are being discussed this evening as study session items - the framework plan for Eastrail in the Wilburton area, and another discussion on the East Main LUCA. Image Regarding the former - unlike other cities along #Eastrail, Bellevue does not own the trail ROW. The majority is owned by King County, and about 1 mile near the OMFE is owned by Sound Transit. County & city have been conducting outreach to guide trail design standards. ImageImage

Tonight's Bellevue City Council meeting has some interesting items on the agenda: a discussion on a requirement to use a certain quota of apprentices in City contracts, an update on the implementation of recommendations from the police use of force review, and ARCH's budget. ImageImage The apprentice initiative is being introduced by CM Barksdale, who notes that such a requirement would provide an avenue for tradespeople to acquire needed skills & time while providing job opportunities for Bellevue youth. He's seeking Council comment & feedback tonight. ImageImage

Tonight's Bellevue City Council meeting will feature discussions around renaming an Environmental Education Center after Jim Ellis (local advocate), the East Main LUCA process, and all the development going on around the city. ImageImageImage I don't mean this as any personal slight against Mr. Ellis or his work, but it's weird hearing this item being introduced when, just four months ago, Council was (relatively) united around no longer wanting to name things after people.

Livetweeting Bellevue's first City Council meeting after their August recess. Topics of discussion include: nomination to the Transportation Commission, B&O Tax amendment, and an update on city's Homelessness Outreach. The latter is what interests me most this evening. ImageImage Demographic data for the people that the city's homelessness outreach coordinator has contacted in 2020 & 2021. General note to @bellevuewa - "transgender" is not a gender itself, but rather an additional adjective to be used to describe one's gender (in contrast to "cisgender"). ImageImageImageImage

Getting a late start to livetweeting the last Bellevue City Council meeting before their August recess. Topics tonight include discussion about CM Robertson Supportive Housing Best Practices request, IOC public hearings, and HB 1590 funding. ImageImageImage CM Robertson presented her proposal as a good faith effort to increase community trust in supportive services, but other CMs are fearful it will increase barriers & take time away from other projects. Staff coming back today w/ more info on time commitment.

Busy Bellevue City Council meeting this evening - talking about ARPA funding, approving funding for Road Safety Assessments on areas near schools, an update on a new Eviction Resolution Program, and discussions around mitigating impacts of the new Eastgate shelter. ImageImageImage The latter agenda item is being introduced by conservative Councilmember Jennifer Robertson, who has historically opposed the location of the yet-to-be-constructed Eastgate shelter. A lot of stuff on tonight's Bellevue City Council agenda - an update on the implementation of the Environmental Stewardship Initiative, some land use ordinances, and funding allocations for some affordable housing developments. W/ luck, the saga w/ the EBCC will conclude today. ImageImage As a response to their denying the parking LUCA back in May, the body passed a new ordinance at their July meeting saying that they'd accept the state-mandated terms, but not the city-adopted ordinance which would go beyond the state requirements.

Tonight's Bellevue City Council meeting livetweeting comes from the air-conditioned comfort of the Crossroads Community Center cooling center. Topics on tonight's agenda include: an MFTE public hearing, an East Main LUCA, and an update on regional issues. Image A couple of modifications to tonight's agenda - City Manager is reporting "on a few items" and item 8f has been removed from the consent calendar and will come back for discussion at a later meeting. Glad at that, since this is a *pretty* big item to just pass on consent. Image

Next speaker is from KC's Housing Justice Project. Talking about the importance of passing stronger renter protections. Noting the lag in passage of rental assistance funds earlier this year and the distribution of those funds. Estimates 1620 households are at risk for eviction. Next speaker is a land use attorney who represents the first speaker. Similar comments to him as well.

Tonight's Bellevue City Council meeting is packed with juicy things, including an update on a potential eviction moratorium, implementation of the use of force policy review, and adopting a LUCA that helps advance the Grand Connection vision. ImageImageImage Originally meant to just look at the legality of a moratorium, the motion was expanded to include a review of how much rental assistance is still needed & how many renters are at risk of eviction in Bellevue. Not sure staff will have that data by next week.

Livetweeting the Bellevue City Council meeting this evening. Topics of discussion include a State of Our Neighborhoods report, which should include some good demographic information, and a briefing on what Council could use HB 1590 funds for (the 0.1% affordable housing tax). Image A resolution is on the consent calendar to spend nearly $125k on audio/video updates for BPD's command center. According to the agenda memo, police staff have been needing to borrow equipment from other departments. Money would help fund 65" 4k LCDs, projectors, & cameras. ImageImageImage

My live-tweeting of tonight's Bellevue City Council meeting will be about an hour delayed (@ 7:00 pm) because I will be attending a @SeattleDSA meeting to help @ElectGallardo. Tonight's topics include a Pride month proclamation, a transportation award, and federal relief funds. ImageImageImage *Really* looking forward to seeing who gets to read the Pride Month proclamation. I will lol *quite* profusely if it's one of these two people. Not much more that I can say than that.

Livetweeting tonight's Bellevue City Council Meeting. Only major things on the agenda tonight are an MFTE discussion and an update on the city's Q1 Cultural & Economic Development progress. However, last week's events show that it's actually easy to miss important events. Image I only found out about the EBCC drama because I stayed to the very end of the meeting, where Council announced the resolution to approve $40k in legal fees. As noted below, this was neither on the published agenda nor in the city news release the next day. theurbanist.org/2021/05/21/eas…
