So your older patient has a delirium and all you have to go on is a positive urinalysis

You know the boss rounding tomorrow is a cantankerous stickler with a penchant for clinical reasoning

How to say you think this is a UTI without copping a lecture on Bayes' Theorem?🧵 Let's assume this is a female aged-care resident, a cohort you know has a 30-50% likelihood of a positive urine

What does that mean? It means 30-50% of this cohort with, say, subdural haemorrhage will have a positive urine dip. So will 30-50% of those with drug-induced delirium

As I got into work this morning, two ducks and eight ducklings were trying to cross a busy road that splits into ten lanes at the intersection. I hope no one was filming because I made a right show of myself. They had made it across the first two lanes and were trying to get up a high curb of the island, only two of the ducklings couldn't get up. So obviously I run over to help, only the drake wasn't all that pleased.
