There's an aspect of this faker.js thing that I haven't really discussed, and I'd like to spend a some time unpacking it out loud.
The crux of this thread is: we sponsored faker.js, I don't think it helped the maintainer much, we didn't get any notice, and I'd do it all again.
To catch you up on the whole faker.js thing: an open source maintainer pushed breaking, malicious changes to some of his most popular packages, for reasons of his own.
His primary complaint was that rich tech companies were heavy users who gave nothing back.

When we were putting together a theme for use in our open source program, we settled on an aquatic metaphor (diver stickers, Deep Tea Divers, Starfish, etc). This was because we want people to think about open source the way we think about the ocean... 1/
It's not about a few big fish, it's about a lot of different kinds of activity all across the ecosystem. Pollution is a problem, so keeping streams clean is important. You need reefs where life can congregate. 2/
