I've been an Engineering Manager (switched from an engineer) for a year now... here are my top learnings:
1. Every team member will want/need a different type of management style. Some want more consistent accountability and others will want a more hands-off approach. Be flexible and tailor your style to each individual.

As someone who reviews hundreds of applications, here are my top tips to land an interview:
✨ If you don't meet all the technical requirements, still apply! But try and have a few projects that illustrate some of your coding skills. They don't have to be huge projects!
✨ Write a short note/cover letter saying why you would like this position. Doesn't need to be big, but anything that shows your passion for the particular role helps you stand out.

I'm giving a tech talk next week on 5 ways to improve your company's technical interview, but here are 5 tips for candidates:
1. Admit what you don't know
It's better to say "I'm not sure. If I had to guess..." or "I don't have experience with X" than BS your way through it.
2. Speak your thoughts out loud
For example: "I'm trying to decide the best approach. I know I can solve it with a nested for-loop but that's not performant so I'm thinking of a more optimal solution."
If you speak, the interviewer can guide you.
