New type of antiviral drugs shown to be effective against a broad range of RNA viruses, Including Covid:

Very unusual mode of action here:

Works by boosting interferon (part of the immune system antiviral response to infection)

ualberta.ca/folio/2024/02/… Covid switches off the interferon response in order to suppress the immune system allowing it to burrow ever deeper into organs and cell, undented by the immune system. UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA "What we know about coronavirus infections is that if patients develop a robust interferon response early in the viral disease, the viral load goes down, they clear the infection and the inflammation is limited," he explains. "However, if the interferon response is delayed or muted, the viral load goes way up and you get a lot more inflammation. That's where people get into trouble." The new antiviral interferon treatments would potentially be given as a nasal spray or a pill, Hobman says. During a viral outbreak, people who might have been expose...

r/FamilyMedicine u/reginald-poofter . DO . 18h Long Covid Discussion Hey all! I'm an Emergency Medicine doc coming to get some information education from you all. I had a patient the other day who berated me for not knowing much (I.e. hardly anything) about how to diagnose or treat long Covid that they were insistent they had. Patient was an otherwise healthy late 20's female coming in for weeks to months of shortness of breath and fatigue. Vitals stable, exam unremarkable. I even did some labs and CXR that probably weren't indicated to just to try and provide more reassurance which were... serious question: because every single Long Covid I've seen shows abnormalities - lab work especially - however, Covid is a very complex disease and if they're serious about learning they have to be willing to spend a lot of time
