In the recently held State Wildlife Board meeting, the chairman of the board, Hon’ble CM of Maharashtra has approved 12 new Conservation Reserves that totally cover an area of 692.74 Sq Km and 2 New Sanctuaries covering an area of 298.61 Sq km. The board approved the notification of 12 new conservation reserves, viz:

A. Chivatibavari, Alaldari in Dhule

B. Kalwan, Muragad, Triambakeshwar and Igatpuri in Nashik.

C. Raigad and Roha in Raigad district.

D. Bhor in Pune.

E. Dare Khurd (Mahadare) in Satara.

Govt. of Sikkim has declared Blue Duke (Bassarona durga durga) as the state butterfly.

It is unique to Sikkim and the eastern Himalayas.

It was discovered in the state in 1858.

It is found at an altitude below 1500 metres in the Himalayas & is commonly found in places like Pakyong, Passingdong, Hee Gyathang in Dzongu, Lingee in South Sikkim and Yangsum in West Sikkim and closer to the State capital in places like Tadong-Ranka.

Tributes to Indian social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule on his birth anniversary.

He and his wife Savitribai Phule started the first school for girls in 1848 in Pune.

He formed the Satyashodhak Samaj (1873) to attain equal rights for people from lower castes. In 1848, when he ead Thomas Paine’s book Rights of Man (1791), he realized that social justice could only be possible with emancipation of women and downtrodden sections of society such as Dalits who were considered untouchables by the orthodox upper castes of that time.

Arya Samaj was a monotheistic Hindu reform movement started in Bombay.

They believed that the Vedas are an infallible authority.

They respected the Upanishads and Vedic philosophy. They opposed the idol-worship  and reincarnation theory of God but accepted the doctrine of ‘Karma’ and transmigration of soul.

They rejected brahmanical dominance of spiritual and social life of Hindus.

They advocated equal status for women in the society.

In 1992, UNGA adopted a resolution for observing World Water Day.
