This thread is about how Kenya got to start talking about getting nuclear energy.

This is also a direct reply to Ferdinand Omondi who has been peddling misinformation about nuclear energy.
I have been following the Kenya power sector developments for some decades especially after I somehow got involved in the Rabai power plant construction & subsequent talks with TZ about gas. I have also made many trips to Germany on energy tours.

I finally have some time to do a review of the Dar Sidara JKIA masterplan. I will be a bit slow in uploading my view so bear with me. Also keep in mind that Dar will work on the final design by the 15th of February. First off, some history of how we got here. After JKIA was built, the original plan was that a new greenfield terminal was to be built by the year 2000. JKIA was operating at maximum capacity. The Millennium came & passed then 2003 Kibaki optimism hit Kenya. KQ expanded rapidly!

@K2grind @xysist In the USA, the Mid-century modern houses were primarily built from the years 1945 to 1969. MCM houses are my favourite. This is where the architecture, includes features like clean lines, open floor plans, large windows, a strong connection between indoor & outdoor spaces... @K2grind @xysist The picture you have posted is from a developer. The most famous Mid-Century home developer was Joseph Eichler. He was a big influence to design in general.

Our politicians have always been fascinated by Singapore. I am reading an old report from 1975, which says that our then councilors demanded to travel to Singapore to see how people lived there & hopefully replicate it here in Kenya.
It's fascinating how many ideas we ignored! The main reason that the 1974 Nairobi Masterplan wasn't implemented was because of the perception that foreigners did it & it was mainly addressed to the funders (World Bank et al).
This seems to be the fate of NIUPLAN which was funded & produced by JICA. No ownership by us!

When Trump got elected, he passed an executive order mandating a classic design for gov buildings. Arch Tairo proposed that we adopt such a measure in Kenya.
I was sceptical.
About the taste of our leaders, I was referring to their gaudy personal houses that they flaunt online.
Our gov offices have these plush panels interior fittings and very ornamental.

This is a perfect example of how people reimagine history.
Somali fell into civil war & its citizens were facing famine. The UN decided to deliver aid, but the warlords would kill the UN workers & steal the aid. The US (read Clinton) decided to intervene & protect the convoys. The events of Black Hawk down unfortunately led to Clinton not sending aid to Rwanda when the genocide happened almost a year later

How did Nairobi end up with sudden intensification instead of an incremental one?
A 🧵. Image In 2004, City Hall engineering department burnt down. It was a fire that started at night & the city council fire engines did nothing till the following morning. A private security fire engine responded but they were denied access to put out the fire due to the "sensitive" area.

@SylviaKangara Since you believe that I have no knowledge of my professional field let me school you. @SylviaKangara There is no country that taxes it's citizens to build housing! I know every defaults to Singapore, but they use pension funds to build public housing. That means I either get a house or money if I already have a house as my pension!

Shauri Moyo is right in the approach landing flight path to Eastleigh Airbase hence the height restriction.

Are we shutting down Eastleigh? Image

Let me state something.

I am for moving the airbase!

Moving it would open up areas around if for higher densities and the airbase itself can be turned into a central park of Eastlands. Eastlands doesn't have parks and trees.

When I tried to explain why the new car number plates are not designed well I was attacked as I e who is against progress. It's hard to explain typography to people who do not see it's usefulness. Let me explain why the new plate isn't good. These are the number plates that we had before. Made out of metal & are stamped with letters. The work was done by prisoners. The plates had big letters since it's the car registration that mattered. At some point the gov added a stamp which was located at the centre of the plate

Can one design a road to lead to peoples death? This is what I have been asking myself especially since my friend lost his daughter on #NgongRoad Sunday morning. @KURAroads this avoidable death is on you.
The accident happened in darkness at the Bridge over the railway. Image @KURAroads At first glance, the road looks fine but anyone who has used this road will tell you that at this location while headed to wards Junction, you cannot drive straight. If you keep left (the rule of the road) you have to swerve to avoid a bridge parapet that is curved into a bow. Image

I will never forget how Escom lost the Grand Inga dam in DRC. They were the favorites to win the bid since they were African. The CEO came & when the MoU was signed, the man talked. And did he talk about how the South Africans are now coming to Africa & how they are going to show Them how things are done. The Congolese were stunned. They kept quiet and the CEO left. The minute he got on the plane to fly back home, the Congolese signed a deal with the Chinese to build the dam! Escom were out & didn't know what hit them.

The problem of style. This will be a long thread. I would never impose a style on anyone. Style is cliche' at best. Four walls and a roof built to a certain design that has found favour with the masses. Style is what you find photographed in the magazines.

Why can we not have a uniform style on KE?
