Lots of loud explosions audible in western Kyiv just now - Russian attack with Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles, targeting Starokostyantyniv air base in Khmelnytsky Oblast and possibly Kyiv itself. Three MiG-31Ks in the air, which means three missiles. Image It's Putin's birthday today so fireworks are to be expected.

Explosions now in Kyiv. We’ve just lost power in western Kyiv. Possibly, there have been hits on infrastructure, though it could be a preventative measure.

This has happened with every major category of weapon, from tanks to F-16s and now to ATACMS: Ukraine begs for them, and Russian attacks eventually makes refusals to supply them untenable. They are then released, to outrage but no significant reaction from the Kremlin… 🧵 …Had they all been released in a shorter timeframe, Ukraine might have won the war by now. It seems reasonable to conclude that these weapons have been drip-fed to Ukraine to prevent Kyiv from losing but stopping it from beating Russia, for fear of consequences of Russia defeat.

Ukraine may have struck another Russian Black Sea Fleet #ship in #Sevastopol Bay: Locals report explosion, air raid sirens and ambulances heading in direction of bay. ATESH partisans report several "200s" (dead) and many "300s" (wounded)

Ambulances continue to rush to the place where Russian authorities claim "nobody was injured". - Ukrayinskiy Krym Telegram channel.

This was a foolish strategy by the Russian opposition: These people's votes are going to be stolen anyway, and lines at polling stations allows the regime to claim a high turnout, making the sham vote seem legitimate.

When faced with a sham election simply don't participate.

Video of crash of Russian Il-76 military transport in Belgorod.

Russia says 63 Ukrainian POWs were on board, but this type of plane is used to transport missiles and Shahed attack drones, and the size of the explosion perhaps indicates explosives were on board. Ukrainska Pravda reports, referring to Ukrainian military, that the plane was actually carry S-300 air defense system missiles, which the Russians have been using to attack Kharkiv.

There is evidence that the #attack on the #market in #Donetsk on Jan. 21, 2024 was a Russian false flag.

Time between sounds of rounds being fired and their impact indicates max distance of weapon of 4km. Front line shown in red: Weapon was fired in Russian-held territory.

The Black Swan we've all (in Ukraine) been waiting for might be the collapse of the Russian communal utilities heating system - unmodernized and under-repaired since the collapse of the Soviet Union. There's the potential for widespread social unrest here. The Kremlin attacked Ukraine's utilities system last year, and this year, for the exact same reason - it hoped to cause social unrest in Ukraine, and popular resistance to the government.

Russia probably preparing another big attack on Ukraine soon:

IL-76 military transport plane seen landing at Seshcha airfield, Bryansk Oblast, likely carrying Shahed attack drones.

Tu-22M3 bombers redeployed 5,000 km, from from Belaya airfield, Irkutsk, to Shaykovka airfield. Air alert just declared in Kyiv city an all eastern and central oblasts - threat of ballistic missile attack. Launcher activity likely spotted. Image

I rarely make predictions, as the future is uncertain and the end is always near, but declarations that #Ukraine's #offensive has #culminated may be premature.
Ukrainian gains continue to be incremental, but the level of fighting has not significantly changed for months. 🧵 Image While gains on the ground certainly haven't matched declared goals, the counter-offensive can't really be considered to have culminated until there is a sharp drop-off in the fighting.

That hasn't yet been observed.

Much of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet seems to be retreating from Sevastopol in Ukraine’s Crimea to Novorossiysk in Russia (which is still in range of Ukrainian sea drones, however.)

After the reopening of the grain corridor, this is another big win in Ukraine’s counter-offensive. x.com/TimothyDSnyder…

New video of the remains of the #Kakhovka dam, and more evidence it was not struck by Ukraine from above, but blown up by Russia, from below. Notice the spillway supports subsiding progressively further into the crater blown in the riverbed by the #Russian #demolition blast. Image There was a maintenance passage through the base of the dam. This is where Russia would have placed the demolition charges, blowing up the dam from within. If Ukraine had attacked from above, with missiles or artillery, much of the blast force would've been lost. (Graphic by NYT) Image

Under @FIE_fencing rules, competitors can be disqualified for refusing to salute their opponent, which is what Kharlan was disqualified for. However, salute is not defined as handshake, and footage shows Kharlan offered salute in form of a sword tap, which her opponent refused. https://t.co/RHkyDZAYTY

Another air alert in Kyiv at 1655. Danger of missile attack, military says. Image Chatter on Telegram messenger channels is that Russian electronic warfare is being directed at Kyiv Oblast, and there are false signals being detected. Ukrainians are nevertheless advised to take refuge in bomb shelters and await the all-clear.

Another Russian air raid on Kyiv - this time in daylight. Sirens sounded at 1109, explosions reported and heard myself at 1116. And again at 1118. Short time between air raid sirens and explosions indicates missile attack - possibly ballistic. Image One missile shot down over Kyiv, another was reported income, but I think I just heard it being shot down as well. Thought to be Iskander ballistic missiles. Russia is testing Kyiv's air defenses with everything it's got. Image

Air alerts in Chernihiv and Sumy oblasts - more Iranian-supplied Shahed Doodlebug flying bombs incoming. Bombers in the air too, so maybe some cruise missiles as well. Air alert expected in Kyiv city and oblast too. Image Big bang just now in Kyiv. At least one cruise missile has been shot down.
