1/ Fatness (the O word) was in the DSM until 1980. I learned this reading a pamphlet called “Fat Feminist Herstory,” in which a founder of the Fat Liberation Front mentions their confrontation with a psychiatrist and the APA 1977. In 1980, the APA took fatness out of the DSM. 2/ Who knows whether the Fat Liberation Front actually had an impact. But the me who was 14 in 1980—held in a psych facility on a 500-calorie-a-day diet—woke up this morning feeling a little bit less alone and a lot more on fire. There had been fat activists fighting for me.
