Fun fact abt HOAs:

They were started in L.A. County around the time the Supreme Court ruled that housing covenants preventing Black families from gaining access to better single-family homes were illegal.

They literally exist to prevent the upward mobility of Black folx. 🤷🏾‍♀️ So—tons of folx seem to think that HOAs today are no longer racist and are merely about uncut lawns, trash cans, parking, and whatnot.

1. The Creative Writing MFA has been in the US for less than 100 years.

2. Most of your OG BIPOC faves never got an MFA.

3. Most MFAs churn out teachers as opposed to pro writers—so it’s only super beneficial if you want to teach. 4. W/ the internet and social media—you can easily get well-rounded reading lists, workshop experiences, info abt pro writing tools, and a pseudo mentorship via threads, articles, and open-market opportunities.

It’s dope if you get one—but you don’t need an MFA to thrive. ✌🏾

Performative activism is changing your profile pic to black and calling it a day. But actual activism involves developing a strategy that brings more attention to the problem AND solution, using an evocative narrative.

Those stories might look like data reports or field studies, but the best stories are always going to be personal testimonies. 2/9
