A few (possibly many) thoughts on the Supreme Court rulings, and reactions to such. The 1920 census proceeded as normal. However, the 1920s was the first and only time (so far) that Congress failed to reapportion the House based on that census.

Fun (?) sidenote to the Northam story and the question of who's behind the hood... The favourite storyline of Klan-made novels and films in the 1920s focused on the idea that when crimes were committed by people in Klan robes, the criminals were actually anti-Klan (usually Catholics) and actually trying to frame the organization.

While we're all talking about non-starter presidential runs by wealthy business leaders who believe only they can save America/only they can break the trend of independent runs going nowhere... I wanted to turn back to a few choice quotes from my all-time favourite savaging of such a candidacy - Oswald Garrison Villard on Henry Ford, 1923.

In honour of the latest of a long line of racist arguments from Steve King, a few choice quotes on the issue of "Western civilization." Klan members in the 1920s were far from the only ones who feared that "civilization" was under threat.

This is a terrific idea, and I would love to see more work done on this In terms of what we might call organizational memory, the Klan is a fascinating example in ostensibly paying homage to earlier white supremacists, but almost always mangling that tradition

In the seemingly neverending effort to ignore motive in favour of mental health in the wake of an act of domestic terror, I'm always reminded of the psychiatrist Thomas Szasz While I disagree with Szasz on many significant points, his address in the wake of the murder of Harvey Milk in 1978 and the subsequent acquittal of Dan White due to "diminished capacity" still carries a lot to think about

In the wake of the widely criticized interview with Jason Kessler, it's probably worth talking about this again... In Congressional hearings, Imperial Wizard William Joseph Simmons declared "Our plan or custom - it is not a plan - has been that wherever a Klan has been organized, the first announcement is that they will have a parade."

The rhetorical forebears of the Ingraham piece are already well covered here. But, since I'm writing about him today anyway, a couple of choice quotes from Klan-backed Texas Senator Earle B. Mayfield... "There are more than 32 million whose parents were born on foreign soil ... More than a third of our people have other than American ideals."

Oh, hey - I took a week off from Twitter and came back to find people arguing over the politics of the 1920s Klan. Just to add to @KevinMKruse's thread briefly - while the nomination of Al Smith by the Democrats in 1928 was the final straw for many Klan members, most (at least at high levels) had also supported the reelection of Coolidge in 1924.
