Context for anyone who doesn't watch Glee: One episode is suddenly interrupted by gunshots and what follows is a huge chunk of the show played without any jokes as everyone fears for their life and goes into hiding. It's very very awkward.

In the first season of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, Nanoha never loses a fight. She struggles, but somehow manages to always turn it around and win.

This is what makes the fact that she loses, and loses big time, in the first episode of the second season so powerful. However, if there had never been a second season, Nanoha would have simply never lost a fight and yet that didn't make that first season dull or make Nanoha a character that isn't exciting to watch fight.

A good story can star a character that doesn't lose for an entire story.
