The freedom to advocate for students' needs is one of the most important freedoms educators have. Unfortunately, that freedom is under attack by the Florida Legislature.

HB 835 will make it more difficult for educators to join together to advocate for their students. HB 835 is one of the bills on today's packed agenda for the House State Affairs Committee and educators from around the state have shown up today to testify against this bill.

"My union membership allows me to advocate for the special needs students I teach without fear of reprisal," says @mikespeaksout a teacher with almost three decades of experience who drove up from Palm Beach County last night.

SB 78 has its third and final committee stop this morning at 9am in the Senate Rules Committee. This bill increases government bureaucracy and makes life more difficult for frontline workers like educators, police and firefighters. The first two committee stops for SB 78 are most notable for their predictability. Educators, police, firefighters and other public workers spoke up against the bill in large numbers—without a single public worker advocating for the bill.

At 3:30 this afternoon the Senate Education Appropriations Subcommittee will meet to discuss SB 48--which is another step in Florida's long march towards privatization of public education. The issues that directly impact the 90% of students who attend public schools have been completely absent from committee meetings during the interim committee weeks.

At 2:00pm today, the Senate Education Appropriations Committee will take up SB 264.

Like many of the bills related to education that seem to be gaining traction this session, SB 264 is a solution in search of a problem. 1/x SB 246 attacks academic freedom on college & university campuses under the guise of an "intellectual diversity" survey.
When testifying on the bill in its last committee stop on Jan. 26, bill sponsor Sen Rodrigues admitted he had no evidence of a problem that justified this bill

#SB7030 is up for final passage in the House right now. You can watch here thefloridachannel.org

As with yesterday's #SB7070 this bill will have structured debate 15 min. per side. First to debate is Rep. @CindyPoloFL103 who says she had a speech ready weeks ago but that last night's questioning and debate changed that speech. "I'm trying to find a balance btw being angry and keeping you accountable," she says.

Later today, the Florida House will take up #SB7070 a bill to expand voucher programs. Those who support the bill will talk about the need to eliminate "waitlists" and how the vouchers over the past decade have helped to "expand opportunity." 1/6 It's worth examining that claim to see just how much opportunity expansion there actually has been.
In 2005, private school enrollment comprised 11.6% of total public and private school enrollment.
Since that time billions of dollars have been spent on vouchers. 2/6
