Did you know there was once a community of native Afrikaans-speaking Jews in South Africa who called themselves "Boerejode" (Farmer Jews)? This is the untold story of a forgotten intersection that challenges everything we think we know about identity, belonging, and the complexity of South African history.

Let me take you on a journey into this lost world... 🧵👇

Unlike their Anglo-German coreligionists, the Eastern European Jews were not secularly well educated. They spoke Yiddish and later heavily accented English and Afrikaans, dressed differently and were altogether more orthodox in their religious practices. Most (around 90%) settled in the cities, but a fair number chose to start their new lives in the dorpies, small villages in farming areas or towns along the transport routes, where they had family, kinsmen or landsman, people from the same village or town back home in Lithuania. Here they would feel comfortable, as the small villages were much like those back home. Some remained in the rural areas while others flocked to the cities, particularly after World War II.

The Lithuanian tradesmen – such as tailors, carpenters and glaziers - could immediately find work in the mining areas, but by far the majority had to learn new skills, often allied to their traditional role as traders back home. They often learnt their new business skills from their first employer, and many began life in South Africa as smouse (peddlers) before moving on to become traders, general dealers, shopkeepers and businessman. As in Eastern Europe, they became the intermediaries between the new markets of the towns and growing cities, and the producers, both black and white. In fact, they were instrumental in the significant economic change that took place in the rural areas of the country in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, providing producers with access to the markets on the one hand, and, offering a wide array of goods to the emerging country consumer on the other.

👉🏽In 2015 and 2016 he led demonstrations protesting UNRWA's intention to reduce its activities in Gaza because of budget cutbacks. The protests, which included sanctions and strikes in UNRWA institutions in the Strip, were widely covered by the media.

Cependant le recteur de l’université d’Anvers, Herman Van Goethem, a clairement déclaré qu’une université ne pouvait pas se comporter comme un parti politique ou un groupe de pression. 🗣️En octobre, j’écrivais à la rectrice pour dénoncer l’anti sémitisme sur le campus de l’ULB et lui demandais un rdv pour exprimer l’inquiétude croissante des étudiants juifs. Il lui a fallu 14 jours pour

-ne pas me recevoir
- envoyer un courriel laconique soi-disant neutre et qui en réalité tentait de noyer le poisson

🗣️Pourtant, les manifestations pro-palestiniennes organisées par les étudiants @Ecolo @PS Comac se sont succédées sur le campus, toujours plus violentes dans les slogans et à l’égard des étudiants juifs, les traitant de terroristes.

🗣️Il faut attendre le 9 novembre 2023 pour que la rectrice envoie un e-mail à la communauté universitaire. Dans cet e-mail, elle
met en avant le libre examen mais précise aussi ce qui suit:
“(…) il nous est important de rassurer les uns et les autres sur l’engagement très ferme des autorités de l’Université à les soutenir. Chacun doit pouvoir vivre sa vie universitaire en toute sérénité et pouvoir exprimer ses opinions dans le respect des autres, sans subir une quelconque intimidation. Nous appelons fortement notre communauté universitaire à faire en sorte que nos campus, heureusement préservés jusqu’ici, demeurent à la fois des lieux de débat et de controverse, mais aussi des espaces à tout prix préservés de toute forme de haine ou d’intolérance.”

🗣️Que dire encore de la présence et de l’influence du Comité BDS ULB qui est très actif, et invite très souvent pour des conférences le Professeur Dubuisson, chantre du narratif pro-palestinien et de sa propagande, tristement célèbre pour avoir tordu le cou au DIU et à l’histoire sur le plateau de la @RTBF 👇🏽
