Has anyone written about how macho conservative fashion is now identical to what was once broadly described as urban “hipster” in the early 2010s? Styled beards and mustaches, pomade hair, skinny jeans, chunky accessories. Which is funny because that usage of “hipster” was mainly suburbanites making fun of people who flocked to cities after the GFC for the recovery, not the first wave of gentrifiers of 2000s who wore American apparel and listened to Matt & Kim. This is Chongqing, my favorite city in China. It’s a truly special place. Less than a kilometer from this area is a packed migrant neighborhood where people peddle their wares in a massive textile market or look for odd jobs. Most are legally second class citizens in the city. One of the amazing things about CQ is the verticality, its like HK on steroids.
