In 2021 I was essentially a homeschooling mom. My kids are enrolled in public school, but teachers were so overburdened+ remote systems so ad-hoc (nobody's fault, who could have foreseen this necessity) that I ended up having to cover most material with them myself. An Experience The latter half of 2020 and the first half of 2021 were my least productive year ever, writing-wise. I had to cut my workload in half to accommodate remote school. Hubs did help, but this being a pandemic, we had to prioritize his job, which is the one that comes with healthcare.

I just saw 3/4 of The Last Duel Figured I would go in for an early matinee bc no one would be there and I could time it such that I could be back in time to pick the kids up from school, but did not account for 20 minutes of previews

premier league fans: united or city? I'm trying to decide which Manchester team to support as a tourist in my remaining 6 weeks of streaming access. 😂 (I have no actual dog in this fight. Whenever Liverpool plays I'm a Liverpool fan bc Mo Salah. I'm just fascinated by the idea of one city having multiple teams playing the same sport in the same league. We don't have that here. So I'm stirring up drama. 😂)

What's most fascinating about this is that you can see a non-theistic religion forming in the thread below. When the definition of "proof" is arbitrary and fungible, you can present what looks to you like an airtight argument about pretty much anything. (Before anyone is tempted to roll through with "there is no such thing as a non-theistic religion" I beg you to take a religion class, any religion class.)

Asian-Led Film Breaks Memorial Day Record During Pandemic; White Writer Promptly Moves Goalposts (Yes, I read the whole article. Even assuming the writer did not choose the headline, it's perplexing. I tried to give it the most charitable reading-author is trying to say that diversity only matters to audiences when it occurs in an already-huge franchise-but evidence is thin)

I am very much on the verge of psychological collapse and made the mistake of reading this article with my morning coffee I find it SO irritating that every other day somebody posts a snarky tweet saying "this pandemic proves that Americans use public school as free babysitting." No. That is a BS take. If it's proved anything, it's that *being a parent is not the same as being a trained educator*

Need something to read while you're watching the stock market? Surprise! I wrote you a midcentury fantasy thriller. It's a novelette, so you'll probably be done with it by the closing bell. amazon.com/Empty-Quarter-… When I wrote the first draft of this novelette in 2012, we weren’t having the cultural conversations we’re having today, so it ended up in a drawer. This is—like Vanity Fair, only shorter—a novelette without a hero.

At a point where watchmaking novel really does need a title It had a really good, non-watchmaking related title for awhile, but the further I got into the novel the less relevant it seemed. So now I'm like...Escapement? Chronograph? THE WHEEL OF TIME?!

I'm really having trouble reconciling this new FBI that is suddenly bound by due process and red tape with the one that was pulling people into unmarked airport rooms without legal counsel for texting in Arabic for the last 20 years. In 2003, when I was living in Cairo, an expat friend (white, Catholic, US citizen) made a joke about how surreal it would be to take one of the guided tours of Lebanon Hezbollah was offering. A few weeks later, he flew back to the US. The FBI was waiting for him at the gate.

Now that his account is permanently suspended, it occurs to me that Twitter has, since 2016, been the unofficial, unelected 4th branch of government. Which is F*CKING SCARY

Since many people have asked: the standard pronunciation (at least among the Ms Marvel editorial team) is Ka MAH la (ie كمالة), not COMMA la (like Senator Harris). Different language group; coincidental spelling. Kamala--envisioned as a feminized iteration of Kamal--is not a real-real name in Arabic or Urdu; the closest one can get and still be grammatically okay is Kamila, which has a slightly different (though related) meaning. The explanation is: I overthink names.
