Unfortunately, I don't have time today for a long reminiscence, but let me share one story... I sat in on Dr. Weiss Halivni's Talmud seminar at Columbia for 2 or 3 years while working on my doctorate at JTS. (1) He liked to use people's Hebrew names in class. Not surprisingly, mine is Avigayil - but he often shortened it to Avi when addressing me. Thing is, it was an eclectic group of people around that table -... (2)
