snail is considered to be high-quality food packed with protein and is also a great source of iron. It contains 15% protein, 80% water, and 2.4% fat which makes it an alternative food for people requiring a high protein low-fat diet. Here’s a breakdown of individual benefits snail provides the body.
Protein
Snails do provide a low-calorie source of protein which is essential for building and repairing muscle and is also better at filling you up than carbs and fat. Many people look to seafood as an easy source

Snail slime Use in cosmetics

The benefits of snail slime in skincare were officially discovered by Dr. Rafael Abad Iglesias, a Spanish oncologist in the 1960s. He applied radiation therapy used for killing cancer cells on common snails. It caused the snails to secrete mucus due to agitation. He noticed that injured areas on the snail’s skin were healed quickly. Dr. Rafael Abad Iglesias tested the snail secretion on humans and concluded that it could help expedite the restoration of human skin.

In the 1980s, a Chilean family

*CALCIUM AS PART OF SNAIL DIET*
WHAT ARE THE NATURAL SOURCES OF CALCIUM?
There is need for appropriate inclusion of certain nutritional supplements needs
which includes calcium in snails’ diet. Low calcium intake will slow growth rate and
cause the shell of the snails to be thinner. The growth and performance of animals
generally is dependent on the quality of feed consumed. Poor intake of feed will
ultimately result into poor growth and poor production & development. Snails need
regular supply of calcium and phosphorus for shell formation,

WHAT ARE THE MERITS OF SNAIL FARMING?

From our own experience, they include, among others:

1. Snail farming in Nigeria is a virgin in the kingdom of livestock as a result the earlier investors without doubt have bright prospects in exploring this venture. 2. Snail farming is a practicable and viable venture yet unexplored in Nigeria. If it has worked elsewhere, it will work in Nigeria.

3. This technology has been approved to be most lucrative farming venture presently, as it requires far less capital investment,

*Types of diseases in Snail farming*
The common diseases affecting snails either in their wild or in their cultured environments includes:

Fungal diseases mainly Fusarium Spp affects indigenous snail species native to West African region. These diseases is commonly referred to as rosy eggs disease and the affect eggs turns reddish brown and die off.

Parasites such as Alluaudihella Flavicornis are diseases vectors to snails both in their wild and under domestication.

A simple process with the benefit of affordability, safety and time saving is to:

drown them in water. Don't commit the mistake of dropping them in water or

OPPORTUNITIES IN (SNAIL SLIME) PRODUCTION(LOCALLY & INTERNATIONALLY)

As far as slime extraction, processing and marketing goes, the opportunities are rife

Locally we havnt been able to fully take advantage of this liquid gold as we lack capacity to constantly produce snail slime in commercial quantities

I’ve been approached by Korean cosmetic companies as well as some companies in the west

We try to source for slime locally to meet immediate demand but there’s a need to harness the value chain for consistent supply

enzymes. They also function in electron transferring reactions of mitochondria. An example is NADH-ubiquinone reductase . Iron is also found in the intracellular cytochrome enzyme system, which functions in energy production and cellular respiration. Moreover, various non-haem enzymes use iron as an active site. It is fairly high and this may account for its use in combating iron deficiency anemia in which the

ECONOMIC BENEFIT OF SNAIL PRODUCTION, NUTRITIONAL VALUE
The chemical analysis of most snail shows that the meat is rich in protein (82.96%) and low in both total carbohydrate (3.26%) and fat (3.98%). The major minerals found in snail consist of calcium (585.5 mg/100 g) phosphorus (269.2 mg/100 g), potassium (331.8 mg/100 g) and zinc (39.0 mg/100 g)
However, iron, and copper content of snail meat is less than 10 mg/100 g. This means that, the meat is a good source of protein and minerals, and may be used to treat nutritional deficiencies and

*CARES OF SNAILS DURING DRY SEASON*

HOW WE CAN TAKE CARE OF OUR SNAILS IN THIS HARMATTAN/ DRY SEASON.
This is the period of inactivity in which the aperture of the shell is covered with white calcareous substance called epiphragm. This condition is common during the harmattan period. In this condition snail can survive for months without food and water. Under normal or natural condition snails can aestivate for months without food. Aestivation can be prevented by watering the soil both in the morning

Countering Aestivation in snail farming.

Aestivation is a condition or process where by snails release their silvery slimy substance rich in calcium which solidifies or cakes to cover it/protect it from dehydration or death as a result of heat or lack of moisture in the environment/ecosystem. In this state they are kept alive with what they had eaten. Some that couldn’t cope during this period actually die in the process. As a result snails become inactive for about 5-7 months depending on when the rains show up, this especially so in

CONSTRUCTING A SNAILERY
A snail pen can be constructed in several ways using diverse materials. The size the shape and type of pen used by a farmer is influenced by the following factors
1) The investment motive: whether is established for a homestead or as a hobby or for commercial purposes.
2) The amount of space available for investment. 3) The dominant climatic conditions in your area. For those who intend to go commercial Choosing a system: the options
The type and dimensions of your snailery or snaileries depend, obviously, on the snail

CARE OF EGGS
Sometimes eggs will be laid on the surface of the soil but in most cases the snail will lay them deep in the soil.
So far, from what we have seen small eggs such as African Achatina species are relatively easy to hatch. Larger eggs such as those from Archachatina and Megalobulimus (oblongus)can be fairly tricky, with Archachatina marginata var. ovum of particular note. This seems to be partly because of the need for steady, warm, moist conditions.

If you wish to keep them all, I'd leave them where they are because the

HATCHING & EARLY LIFE
The eggs will start to hatch from 24 hours onwards in some species but it is genus and possibly species dependent, with additional factors of how long they have been stored internally and the ambient and soil temperature . Eggs do not necessarily hatch uniformly and this is more noticeable in species that have a long gestation period (perhaps 4 weeks). The first (usually an uppermost member) to hatch can be 10 days or more in front of the main group, with some taking noticeably longer.
