Update on the @WUSM_BMB junior faculty search. We received 135 applications, and had an 11 member search committee go through them all. Each application was read by 3 faculty and scored. We then selected 14 for Zoom interviews and sent them the questions below ahead of time. 1/ Image I will say we had a meeting to discuss the top 30 candidates, so the 14 we selected we not just the top 14 scored. The Zoom interviews went well, although there was a range of preparedness and excitement that each candidate brought. However, all interviews were good. At this 2/

A little over a month left before the deadlines for most graduate programs arrive, so I just wanted to reach out to all those undergrads who are currently applying (or will apply in the future) to lend some support and encouragement, and also provide some insight on the 1/ application components from a former grad admissions chair. Sorry, this will be a longer thread. The application will usually consist of:

It’s been nearly 15 year of having the privilege to lead my own research group. In this time I’ve had many wonderful scientists pass through. I’ve learned a lot about not just leading a group, but also being a good mentor to younger scientists. Excited but anxious, as they folks are fantastic, and many places are trying to recruit them as well. For anyone on the job search, a couple tips 1/ for this part of the faculty recruitment process. This second visit is important, please make sure to let the institution know about people you didn't meet in the first interview, that you'd like to meet now, especially those outside of the dept. Chair of graduate admissions for a long time, and I've seen many great candidates not do well on grad school interviews, especially URMs. Here are some thoughts I have on this to hopefully help those interviewing this year. 1/ You will absolutely be asked to describe your research experiences. Know the big picture/significance of the work, and also the finer details of what you specifically did experimentally. What would you do if you could continue to work on the research project longer term? 2/
