Some musings on food system change and philanthrocapitalism, inspired by this tweet. AFSA has recently emerged as a powerful voice for agroecology in Africa, and has aimed to stand in direct opposition to the Gates-Funded Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) 🧵1/ While not nearly on the scale of AGRA, AFSA of course also needs funding to do its work. One of AFSA's operating fund grants comes from the Agroecology Fund, which is sponsored by New Venture Fund (NVF)... 2/ agroecologyfund.org/grantees-1/201…

I spent the morning reading this report by Phil Howard & @IPESfood on "The Politics of Protein." My takeaway: Lots of valid points about the need for a more diverse, sustainable food system. BUT its framing often reinforces the polarization it claims to oppose. A long 🧵 1/ Let's start on where we agree. I saw several shares of this article about the evaluation of a key Gates-funded Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) program. I was skeptical of the source and headline, which claimed it "flunked." So I took a closer look. 🧵 1/
usrtk.org/bill-gates-foo… First, let me be clear that I am not a Gates apologist. I've written about the problems of philanthrocapitalism (in ag and elsewhere), which is often stuck on techno-fixes, lacks responsiveness and accountability, over-promises and under-delivers. 2/ taylorfrancis.com/chapters/edit/…

I'm currently one of around 250 people attending a Saturday morning "Big Ag & Anti-Trust" virtual conference. @CLeonardNews is kicking things off with a focus on the "meat racket." Anti-trust is so hot right now! In his closing comment, @CLeonardNews says he UNDERESTIMATED the criminality of the meat industry. Encourages us all to be extremely skeptical of big meat's claims across the board. #BigAgConference
