When I was a kid, I read a lot of pulp paperbacks published in the pre-war years; 1910s & 1920s/30s. I was a child of Jewish Eastern European refugees. No generation of my family had ever not been a migrant. I knew what was to come. What was striking is that the writers did not. It was tragic to read the excitement with which writers greeted the looming world wars. They knew they were coming. They seemed to think war would be fun. That some suffered was an indication of poor character. "They" had an inferior culture/race/nationality. "We" were superior.
