‼️Denver City Council will have the 1st reading of the Affordable Housing Fund sales tax INCREASE proposal on Monday, 8/12. @dobetterdnvr

Read Brandon Richard’s 🧵 for more process details. The link below is the proposed ordinance and ballot language. A few thoughts: This is being pitched as a fund to help teachers, cops, nurses.

In truth, it’s an unspecified slush fund that can be used to subsidize developers as long as a vague number of units produced are affordable to 100% of AMI or lower.

Walking in, there’s the usual detritus (e.g., fresh puke on the sidewalk, trash everywhere) and drugged out homeless passed out in the entrance. Image Inside: near empty shelves. When I asked if they were closing, the answer was depressing. “We got a big truck yesterday, but don’t have the staff to stock. People don’t show up or quit.” I didn’t realize they’re closed Sundays. I’ve never been homeless; I was one of the lucky drunks who hit bottom and accepted the help offered before I’d destroyed my family, killed myself, or burned my life to the ground. Many of my friends walked a different path, coming to sobriety after years on Denver’s streets. 🧵 I’ve never met the skilled and talented David John Heitz who wrote the opinion piece linked above. In it he examines the advocacy of @dobetterdnvr through the lens of a once lost and suffering soul, like those DBD profiles on their account.
