Eliminated 8,127 years of unnecessary, excessive and expensive exposure to prison time.
Stopped seeking the death penalty in 17 cases.
Withdrew 77 pending motions to transfer kids to adult court.
Saved taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.
All during my first 100 days.
As DA, I have banned the death penalty and stopped seeking capital punishment in 17 cases.
A conservative estimate is that we have saved taxpayers at least $8.5 million.*
As Los Angeles District Attorney, I have banned the use of most enhancements.
Sentence enhancements have NEVER been shown to enhance public safety.
However, excessive sentences have been shown to increase recidivism, leading to more victims of crime in the future.

Sentence enhancements:
- Have never been shown to enhance public safety
- Are a primary driver of mass incarceration
- Fall disproportionately on communities of color
In short, enhancements are unjust & unnecessary.

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the beating of Rodney King.
It was one of the first times police brutality was captured on camera and broadcast for all to see.
Communities of color had long raised concerns, but the recorded assault brought the reality to life.

After the officers involved were acquitted for their roles in the beating, the LA Riots that ensued lasted six days, killing 63 and injuring thousands.
I will never forget how, 30 years ago, I stood on the front lines as a sergeant with the LAPD.

As Los Angeles District Attorney, I am committed to ending cash bail. Why?
- Wealth is not a proxy for dangerousness
- Cash bail criminalizes poverty
- Cash bail perpetuates racial disparities
The research is clear. Cash bail is unfair and unnecessary.

Celebrating the murder of a Black man at the hands of police demonstrates a profound absence of humanity.
The mock valentine underscores problematic & racist perceptions of law enforcement culture regarding the communities we are sworn to protect & serve. latimes.com/california/sto…
The callous nature of what's alleged here is exceedingly disturbing, and it speaks volumes to law enforcement's inability to recognize how harmful the use of unlawful force is to public attitudes about police.

When I took the oath of office, I not only promised to make change, I also made a commitment that I would listen and the community would have a place at the table.
Over the past few days I met with and heard from many of you. While most have welcomed the reforms I have implemented, the largest concerns I have heard center around my policy of ending all enhancements.

40 years ago I walked my first beat as a young police officer.
Today, I was sworn in as the 43rd District Attorney of Los Angeles.
I am not the same man I was when I first put on the uniform.
One of the many reasons for that is because of situations I faced as a young officer - situations & experiences that have stayed with me, and that continue to shape my approach to this work.
