Two years after the trauma of the Oct 7 slaughter, Israelis are waking up to the announcement of a deal to return all the hostages in 72 hours and end the war. Until this actually happens, we're still in cautious optimism mode, but this time, the details look real. > Credit Trump for imposing terms on all the parties - directly on Netanyahu, and on Hamas by pressuring/ embracing Qatar and Turkey. 1) In Israel, there is significant criticism over details of the "Trump deal," particularly from within Netanyahu's coalition. But given the power distribution among different actors, my assessment is that the terms are the best (or least bad) possible for Israel. > 2) Core issue is return of all Israeli hostages after 2 years of heinous torture by Hamas. Israel will need to release another group of murderers - causing more pain, particularly to the families of victims. But there is better option on the table - this is the price.

Thread: On "The Decline and Fall of NGOs" (@WSJ, Walter Russell Mead, citing book by @sarahsunnbush & Jennifer Hadden) - links at the end of the thread.
1) The decline of the powerful NGO industry, including reduced funding, major staff cuts, and the end of the "halo effect" is long overdue and a positive development for democracy. Political NGOs like @amnesty, @hrw, @oxfam, etc. are unaccountable and lack transparency and checks and balances on their power. 2) The term "non-governmental organization" is often misleading -- many are funded by governments (ie GoNGOs), usually without transparency, and used as policy subcontractors to push ideological and political objectives under facades of apolitical expert organizations. USAID was a prominent example, as are counterparts in Europe, UK, Canada, Australia etc.

Then, as now, there are few verifiable facts, but relying on Palestinian “sources, UN & NGO industry allies, Israel is pronounced guilty. The concerted campaign turns propaganda into unquestioned fact. >Image Palestinian officials and NGO “experts” rushed to appear on the BBC and CNN, where they authoritatively declared that Israeli forces killed 500 or even 1,300 civilians. Citing Palestinian hospitals and anonymous “eyewitnesses”, they described IDF tanks allegedly bulldozing homes and executing civilians. Derek Pounder, from Amnesty International, told the BBC that he had direct first-hand knowledge to verify these atrocities. But Pounder was nowhere near Jenin, as was the case for all the other “independent sources.”>

1) A ceasefire, if it holds, will be followed by a lengthy period of "battle damage assessment." In Iran, the BDA will focus first on regime survival. Are popular opposition forces strong and organized enough to replace the fanatics that took power in 1979? Did Israeli strikes on internal repression sites open space for a wider revolt? > 2) What will BDA show regarding Iran's conventional military including IRGC? The IDF killed a large segment of senior officers - the command structure is severely weakened, and training replacements will take time.
