Charles Ponzi built the original Pyramid scheme; Nick Leeson was the rogue trader who broke the Barings Bank; and Bernie Madoff bilked investors with trading that did not exist. All of these men were unambitious amateurs when compared to Gregor McGregor. One of the over 15,000 securities which Global Financial Data includes in the UK Stocks Database is the Poyais 3% Consolidated Bonds of 1822, which traded on the London Stock Exchange.

The Baltimore Stock Exchange Index outperformed the US-100 up until 1840, primarily due to the exclusion of the Second Bank of the United States from the index; however, after 1840, the US-100 provided better returns than the Baltimore Stock Exchange Index. By the 1870s, the US-100 had a higher return than the Baltimore SE Index and this remained true until 1950. Between 1803 and 1950, the price index for the Baltimore SE returned only 0.69% per annum growing 2.75-fold while the US-100 returned 1.48% per annum growing 8.6-fold.

Some stocks have made incredible moves, rewarding investors immensely. In many cases, the most important part of the stock’s performance came before the company listed on the NYSE, not after. A good example of this is Kentucky Fried Chicken Corp (KFC). KFC incorporated on March 4, 1964, and merged into Heublein, Inc. on July 8, 1971. Before the original KFC (now owned by Yum! Brands, Inc.) was acquired, it had one of the most spectacular runs of the 1960s, but most of it occurred before KFC joined the NYSE.
