GP Here's a hypothetical.

When Social Security was enacted, the average life expectancy for Americans was below 65 years, meaning half of all Americans were dead before being eligible.

1/x GP So clearly, Congress intended to raise the retirement age over the years so that at no point in the last 90 or so years would more than half of Americans be alive when they became eligible for benefits.

@jeffcharlesjr Rx Unfortunately the doctors advising him didn't like him. NIH scientists are almost uniformly Ds & Birx worked for Hillary Campaign at one point. Fauci also was 'my way or the highway' in that he didn't care about the economy, liberty, or child development, just the virus 2/x @jeffcharlesjr Rx The press railed against him saying he has a conflict of interest because doing a good job would help his election campaign. Yeah, they said that. When he tried to give hope early, (HCQ might be helpful) he got bashed for putting the cart ahead of the horse. 3/x

🧵🧵🧵GP So I guess I'll do a thread on my thoughts on how Republicans should come at Democrats on entitlements.

Here goes. GP Explain the simple math.

Social Security ("SS") funds current year payments to beneficiaries with current year payroll taxes. The entire system depends on more current contributions coming in than benefits going out.

GorT: ok, GorT was thinking on his drive home from a presentation this afternoon about what lies ahead with Biden-Harris administration. Let's dive in.

1/
GorT: I'm really starting to buybinto a theory that the Dems are trying to get Joe to and thru the 2024 election. At some point soon after Jan 2025, he will step down and Harris moves in. She names a VP for Congress to approve.

GP There's a really, really easy way to avoid this fate. Pay your property taxes.

If you can't afford to pay your property taxes, sell the house and use the proceeds (if any) to secure new living space. GP I'm not even sorry about this. Property taxes are ad valorem and no one should be able to jigger the system because they're old or a veteran or whatever.

Pay the amount of taxes due on the value of your house, move, or lose it to tax sale.

GP 🧵🧵🧵 I think I've pinpointed when America started rocketing down the rapids towards the 1,000 foot waterfall into the gaping maw of the abyss.

PEANUT ALLERGIES.

Bear with me. GP When I was growing up and attending school in the 1970s and early 1980s, there were kids with peanut allergies.

Teachers explained it to us, told us to make sure to wash our hands and faces after lunch, and to never share food with the sufferer.

GP Some great quotes in this opinion piece.

"There’s little evidence that many of these [DEI] initiatives work."

nytimes.com/2023/01/17/opi… GP "And the specific type of diversity training that is currently in vogue — mandatory trainings that blame dominant groups for D.E.I. problems — may well have a net-negative effect on the outcomes managers claim to care about."

GP Ms. Hannah-Jones is a clown who doesn't deserve to sit on a college faculty.

No one's scared to acknowledge slavery's history in this country. It's part of our past which has continuing impact on black Americans.

But her proposed solutions are always a version of "pay me." GP Slavery and legal racism in this country absolutely do have continuing impacts.

Redlining, criminal justice/sentencing, education, access to good medical care, etc.

GP I think I am not grokking the debt ceiling issue and its risks.

If the debt limit isn't increased, doesn't that mean only that Treasury can't borrow new money in excess of the old limit?

Nothing preventing Treasury from cashing out old debt by issuing new debt, right? GP So I'm speculating the *real* issue isn't current debt (except insofar as retiring debt by issuing new debt will require a much higher interest rate) but *new* spending which hasn't yet occurred.

GP It seems like hubris to believe that because we've lived in the US and kept semi-accurate weather records for maybe 100 years that we can say with certainty that today's weather and/or climate trends are abnormal for the place. GP Even core samples of earth, etc. only gives us a relatively limited snapshot of a really specific place and time. To extrapolate on that basis seems attenuated.

CZ Here in Illinois, some discussions regarding whether the Illinois Sheriffs Association should have taken a stand against the anti-gun law, vs. letting it play out in court. CZ The notion is that by taking a stand, the anti-gun politicians are better primed to defend it in court. But here's the reality:

GorT: more stupidity. The article says that Clinton "inadvertently" had classified material on the email servers. "Inadvertently" is a word used by these clowns to try to soften this. And having classified material for over 6 years in 3 different places is pretty negligent. GorT: what all of this coverage misses is who and how did the info get there. In each case - Trump, Clinton, and Biden. The article mentions what the FBI would do if you or I had classified material. Let's play that out for the kids who are "journalists" or opinion writers

GP The problem with government (for the most part) isn't the individuals who work in the myriad alphabet soup of agencies with great authority over everyday Americans' lives.

The problem is the inhumanity of the aggregate agency comprised of all those people. GP Generally, a person isn't bad and has no intent to infringe on people's rights.

But the agency disaggregates the process and spreads it across tens, hundreds, or thousands of employees.

@alexthechick Rx - As usual, you pretty much nailed it. I think there are a few inflection points where things ramped up along the way. I think the brains breaking with Trump might have happened anyway if it were Cruz or Paul (the Earth 2 & 3 Nominees where Trump didn't run), but maybe not. 1 @alexthechick Rx - The difference with Trump is that Washington Republicans blink, play nice, and probably have bodies of their own that they're also hiding to some degree. Trump came in with 'I'm not DC' and then they poked the bear. He's not a bear to be poked. 2

Rx When I was little, kindergarten, maybe, I watched The Paper Chase (the movie, and TV show) with my dad. I think he wanted me to have a lofty idea of what college was at a young age. Professor Kingston (John Houseman) became the platonic form of a professor to me. 1/x Rx By second grade, I decided I wanted to be a doctor, and my dad drove me up to see the small liberal arts college 45 minutes north of my house. I was wowed by the gothic spires and ivy covered walls. At that point, I was all in with making myself a competitive applicant. 2/x

GP It's not a good movie.

Also, people have abandoned going to see movies in the theater. Rx Reasons I have abandoned going to see movies in the theatre:
1) Tickets are overpriced
2) I can't stick to a movie time when I'm forced to buy reserved seats two weeks in advance to get the seats I want opening weekend.
3) Not because of COVID, at all, seriously.
