Malam Nasir @elrufai has presented N219m to three tertiary institutions as full payment of tuition fees till graduation for 1251 students under the Kaduna State Government’s merit and need-based scholarships scheme. The state also provides a students’ loan window. The Kaduna State University is paid N158.53m for 755 students; the Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya, got N33.45m for 317 students and Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic received N27.6m for 179 students.

KADUNA UPDATE: KDSG has informed the elected chairmen of Chikun and Giwa Local Govt Councils that they should continue in their roles, declaring that their suspension by the House of Assembly violates the Constitution and the laws of Kaduna State. A legal opinion by Attorney-General Aisha Dikko stated that Section 8 of the Constitution and the Kaduna State Local Govt Law No. 3 of 2018 place LGs as independent organs of government, with duly elected legislative councils, and clear procedures for removing elected officials.

Aisha Dikko, the Attorney-General of Kaduna State, has affirmed that KDSG respects the rule of law has afforded due process to every citizen it has charged for incitement, injurious falsehood or criminal defamation. facebook.com/393816480127/p… She noted that most of the individuals mentioned in the petition, have pending criminal cases. One of them has a bench warrant for his arrest for failing to appear in court, while the state has rejected the request from one of them for an out of court settlement.

KDSG has directed the immediate removal of roadblocks at the various boundaries of the state. Barricades placed at the entry points are to be removed forthwith, while KDSG officials will no longer be posted for boundary patrols. The State Taskforce on Covid-19 has reviewed the situation at the state boundaries as the state emerges from partial lockdown. Persistent extortion of vehicles conveying essential goods by some security officials is complicating an already challenging period.

Justice Binta Murtala Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja, yesterday reaffirmed her declaratory judgment in the suit filed in 2009 by Malam Nasir @elrufai, that there is no missing N32bn from the sale of government houses he supervised as FCT minister. Malam Nasir @elrufai filed the case in 2009 when the EFCC was smearing him on the matter and he joined 11 other entities in the suit. The court granted all the reliefs he sought. The powers of the EFCC to investigate was not among the issues he canvassed.

Reforming the Education sector in Kaduna is a continuing struggle against decades of neglect: one primary school in Rigasa had more than 22,000 pupils, taking lessons in tents. The pupils of LEA School, Lokoja Road, Rigasa, have since said bye to that sorry era. From the ashes of neglect, public primary schools are making the leap to modernity. The Kaduna State Govt has disbursed the sum of N300 million as scholarship to first batch of beneficiaries of the new scholarship and loan scheme. 7,943 tertiary students are pencilled to benefit from the scholarship which has five different schemes for undergraduate students. Beneficiaries of the Need Based Scholarship are receiving N109,000 covering tuition fees and upkeep of the students and the Merit Scholarship beneficiaries are receiving N39,000.
