my 16 year old son has been held in youth detention for two weeks now. today, he was scheduled to appear in front of a judge. his grandmother and my friend, anthony (who helped start gran varones with me and is now in law school) accompanied me to court today. it wasn’t long until a latina woman came out of a room with clipboard in hand and asked aloud, “is the family of ______present?” a father raised his hand. she walked over to him and told him, “the judge is not seeing any cases today. so you will have to come back on the 30th.”

today we remember civil rights and aids activist, kiyohsi kuromiya. because of his vision and commitment to people with hiv, many of us are living longer and healthier lives.

#AsianHeritageMonth in the late 1980’s, the only approved hiv treatment medication available was AZT. when it hit the market in 1987, there was hope that it would “save” the day. that didn’t happen. in fact, the side affects of AZT were brutal and caused many to discontinue use.

i don’t know who needs to hear this but we need to make house music black and gay again. miss juliet roberts gave us slammin’ house tracks long before US pop radio began to add house songs in regular rotation. one of my faves is the 1994 hit “caught in the middle.” the song peaked at #1 on the US club chart and #14 in the UK.

as media celebrates adam rippon, i want to remind the universe of the fabulous rudy galindo, a latinx HIV positive gay man who queered the figure skating world more than 20 years ago. rudy first found success skating with kristi yamaguchi, when they won the US national championships in both 1989 and 1990. their partnership soon ended as kristi began her very successful career as a solo skater. rudy's solo skating career was quite the opposite.
