Perhaps it is sympathy with Roman Law systems but I have no issue with national ID cards. The problem that first world countries have though is that they cannot speedily deport people who have no entitlement to remain. Eventually, visa issuance will have to be further restricted. I tire of libertarian arguments about national ID cards - identity fraud is costly & rampant & the State knows a lot about you as it is & if anything combining that data into one repository makes it easier for you to protect your privacy, such as it remains...

Good morning all & OTD in 1916, the Battle of the Somme commenced, in which British Empire armies would suffer approximately 20,000 KIA on this first day alone. Prime Minister HH Asquith's own son would be killed & (future PM) Harold Macmillan would be wounded in the campaign Image At the time of the Somme, my great uncles were in the Honourable Artillery Company and the Royal Garrison Artillery. Disagree-the signs were there in the 1990s and not just in the US. It was always going to end when first world countries' populations saw open trade & borders as making them less secure not more secure. Making China part of the WTO (Blob conventional wisdom) guaranteed this I have thought more on this - as I was a school and then university student in the 1990s - and yes there was a whole 'whither the globalised world order?' The problem of all Free Trade ideology for nation-states with real world responsibilities is its complete unrealism ... rather like open borders, free trade is utopian ... you cannot be a great or even regional power & rely overly on others supply to you in critical industries Image Conservatism in the English speaking world, historically, was always Protectionist. Social media bill is another very poorly drafted law from the very same people who drafted the Voice constitutional alteration (which failed) & the Misinformation/Disinformation bill (which was withdrawn). I am finally watching the @martyrmade / Tucker discussion on Churchill. I am not sure who among the critics have actually watched it. As I dislike Twitter pile-ons, I think everyone should watch what X says before X is put in the tumbril. My response as a Churchillian below. Firstly, it astounds me (and no doubt many in the old Empire) why Americans in 2024 are so invested in the British Empire in the 1930s when the Americans of the 1939-1941 period wanted no part of WW2 & the US had to be bombed into WW2 & it was the Nazis who declared war on the US

1/ operational level of war was destroyed by modern communications
2/ logisticians are everything
3/ moving from long-used ammunition calibres esp 5.56 is idiotic given massive costs/disruptions & few benefits 4/ Clausewitz is under-rated
5/ most of the senior officers from WW2 were actually better in most respects than the ones we have now
6/ war is won by 80% solutions
7/ given manpower issues, conscription is more likely than not to return in the West
