I will .... need more swords here.
But, for an opening salvo ....
1/ operational level of war was destroyed by modern communications
2/ logisticians are everything
3/ moving from long-used ammunition calibres esp 5.56 is idiotic given massive costs/disruptions & few benefits 4/ Clausewitz is under-rated
5/ most of the senior officers from WW2 were actually better in most respects than the ones we have now
6/ war is won by 80% solutions
7/ given manpower issues, conscription is more likely than not to return in the West

This is how the Bailout begins ....
"If you do not bailout X, employees are not paid" Here we go ..... that destroyed community in Ohio should say they now "identify" as an insolvent bank in California

Overwhelming majority of people are tolerant/do not care about people’s sexual orientations. But those wanting to wage a “wear the ribbon” culture war esp in NRL are trying to impose their culture on a large Christian esp Pasifika playing group. The NRL clubs get this it seems Would add that the average football club or church is a lot more diverse in every sense than the ABC or the political class …

"In a big country, dreams stay with you" The Canadians and the Americans are our fellow English speaking, federations, on the massive scale .... the Canadians kept the Crown and also speak French .... the Americans kept some of the common law and speak a species of English Image

On a wet and colder day in London, very good to visit Buckingham Palace and St James Park, today. The King & Queen were not in residence but it was nonetheless good to see 'Buck House', again. The Australian gates with coats of arms of the six Australian States that open to Buckingham Palace are in good condition.

Harry is alleging in 2022 that his older brother assaulted him in Harry's own home in Kensington Palace in 2019. And yet after this alleged assault, racism & whatever else allegations, etc, Harry still then wanted to stay a working part of the Royal Family in 2020 before. Hello? One can but be thankful that Prince Philip and then our late Queen went to their eternal reward and never had to witness this .... simply abominable behaviour

Good morning all & OTD in 1939, Captain Hans Wilhelm Langsdorff, Commanding Officer of the German cruiser Admiral Graf Spee, orders the ship's scuttling in the River Plate estuary, off Montevideo. Langsdorff would later commit suicide, while wrapped in the ship's battle ensign Image This is a 2019 German news story on the German families affected by the scuttling of Admiral Graf Spee & the legacy of Captain Hans Langsdorff (who some have said died while wrapped in the old Imperial Naval ensign).

The details of this QLD police shooting seems an ambush - such heartbreaking losses: "Constable Rachel McCrow, 26, and Constable Matthew Arnold, 29, were gunned down at the property in the western Darling Downs, about three hours west of Brisbane.
news.com.au/national/queen… "There are reports two male shooters wearing camouflage gear initially opened fire on the four officers, and proceeded to stand over the two fallen officers and firing further shots at close range before taking their weapons."

It is quite sad to see that Harry - who had made a decent life for himself in the Army and as a champion of veterans causes - just became this wallowing wastrel, mired in self pity. Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, was the youngest surviving son of George V, spent his life as the "spare spare spare" & did all his royal duties, including serving in WW2 in harm's way and then as a very good Governor-General of Australia.

Twitter before Musk:

(1) US has literally hundreds of thousands of lawyers - but the ex FBI general counsel Baker ends up at Twitter

(2) Twitter was openly used for trafficking child sex abuse material

(3) Baker impeded reading of the Twitter files - but did nothing re (2)??? This is simply a remarkable passage of events whereby an FBI chief lawyer - who was already mired in controversy - just happens to end up … at Twitter … and then proceeds to impede the new owner’s access to Twitter files …

Simply staggering revelations re the Brittany Higgins case in @australian this morning - the narrative by the media in this saga seems to have been mostly lies and/or selective omissions of what claims the evidence could ever (possibly) support. Image “Investigators at this juncture have a number of concerns regarding inconsistencies in disclosures and other evidence obtained during the investigation. In light of the issues identified, serious concerns exist as to whether there is sufficient evidence ..." Image

This is absolutely shameful from Drumgold. Prosecutors speak through the carefully particularised cases they make in court & which are based on the evidence. Cases are not run in the media. Prosecutors are independent precisely because they are never supposed to do this. I note all the very woke lawyers online suddenly go silent when a DPP trashes centuries of prosecutorial ethics and obligations, by simultaneously withdrawing a criminal prosecution in the court & then try to continue it in the media. Drumgold’s behaviour has been shameful.

Have no side here but if Natalie Ward (who has no discernible achievements as a State minister) cannot beat an ex staffer nobody in a preselection no one has said was rigged then she is probably not future anything material. Matt Kean was on Cross’ side iirc so who this is absurd Image Buried lede here from @AlexSmithSMH is Natalie Ward just did not do the work with locals (expect it on a platter?) & she did not even live in the seat in a very particular part of Sydney. Google says she is from Adelaide so she should have been doing the work if she wanted it Image

Deo Gratias .... hopefully this leaves Sam Harris with more time to speak with other brave rationalist sceptics ... like the kind who took SBF and FTX seriously
podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/271… Everyone who lived through “new atheism” knew that it would end in grift (SBF/FTX) or going over to some fringe ideology. We as Humans are fallen and by nature idolatrous. Why the first commandment is what it is.

A very hard one here - the Serbs did cause World War One ... the Brazilians deposed the saintly Emperor Dom Pedro II ... may soccer be the winner on the day
#BRASER #FIFAWorldCup To be clear, I have some Portuguese ancestry, but we supported the Braganzas, and thus the fall of Dom Pedro II was a grave crime ... at the same time, the Serbs appear a difficult people but are great friends - and the Serbs suffered much, unfairly.

Imagine everyone should 'calm their farms' and await the hopefully transparent investigation before jumping to WW3 (RUS missiles & UKR defence munitions will both kill you). Find the casings & examine their markings. Nothing can be taken on trust here. Not saying this is true - that it was a Ukrainian s300 - but this is an example of why you wait for the evidence to be examined rather than rush to promote insane WW3 casus belli or trust “anonymous US intelligence official”

Apropos a few debates here: if you grew up in Gen X/Y, you were old enough to know World War II generation members & to have your working world shaped by Boomers. You noted the modestly heroic WW2 built everything useful while the Boomers have been little more than locusts tbqh The WW2 generation had their war preceded by the Depression and grew up in the shadow of whoever survived WW1. The Boomers by contrast came of age in regulated welfare states with full employment and societal guardrails, not all perfect but aimed at most doing mostly better.

In terms of recent #GreatWar books, this is really good on the Central Powers at war. The chapters on Brest-Litovsk & the Germans, Austro-Hungarians, and Ukrainians, bear eerie resemblance to our own times. The 1918 collapses begin with shortages of food & basically everything Image Also strongly recommend @20committee book on the fall of the Habsburg Army ... especially if you were or are in a wintry lockdown that is redolent of Przemysl in 1914-1915. It was stocked by the @HGM_Wien on my last visit (one of the best museums anywhere). Prost! Image

If you were born in 1900 in the UK - such as Mountbatten - by the time you turned 50 you had been through
- the Great War and the collapse of almost every other major European empire and monarchy
- the worst Depression since the 1890s if not ever
- all six years of World War II The British documentary series that Lord Mountbatten narrates on his life & times is fascinating - his recollection of his Russian relatives, the Romanovs, and his feelings, even in the 1970s, for the Grand Duchess Maria he hoped to marry, is moving

The Twitter management fired by Musk had it coming. Musk's idea of the platform as a neutral public square could always have been implemented but there was a determined desire by the now departed team to meddle. That journos are now ignored/not boosted is hardly the world's end. Everyone who is on Twitter complains about Twitter -perhaps whining is an essence of the human condition - but I actually find it very useful for first reports of breaking news as well as my own public filing cabinet for what I find interesting. People can follow/unfollow idc
