Howard Schultz always believed he was a good, compassionate CEO. Then his workers started to unionize. I spent three months on this profile. 🧵
washingtonpost.com/business/2022/… I watched Howard break down in front of his top execs.
“I know what it has taken to build this place. I know what’s at stake right now,” he continued, struggling to get the words out. “...And let me be honest with you,” he told them. “Time is not on our side.”

Earlier this summer I stumbled on the most bizarre story: A land rush in Peoria's left-for-dead south end. Dozens of people from California, Utah, NY were buying up abandoned $5,000 homes sight unseen. Most were on the verge of collapse. A short thread:
washingtonpost.com/nation/interac… None of the buyers had ever been to Peoria. Many had never even heard of the city before they bought there. They included a barber, a truck driver, a security guard, a day care teacher, a nurse, a Boeing factory worker.
