🚨WE'RE GOING TO THE SUPREME COURT🚨

⚖️Along with @LondonGypsyTrav and Derbyshire Gypsy Liaison Group, we've been granted permission to challenge the use of anti-Traveller 'wide injunctions' at the Supreme Court.

MORE INFO: gypsy-traveller.org/news/wide-inju… (1/6) FFT logo in white, top left... 🏦In the original High Court case back in January, all existing injunctions were brought together for an in-depth scrutiny by Mr Justice Nicklin, with many of the Orders being discharged in the process.

On 20th Feb 1856, over a quarter of a million Roma people were freed from centuries of enslavement under Romanian principalities.

Today, we remember all those Roma people subject to torture, abuse and forced labour - and recognise the legacy of maltreatment and inequality. (1/5) You can read more about the history of slavery for Roma people in Romania in the following links:

Many thanks to @RKWinvisibleman for this write-up on the state of sites and the #PolicingBill. (1/6) (2/6)

It's National Hate Crime Awareness Week.

The race hate experienced by Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people cannot continue and must be dealt with wherever it appears, online and in real life.

There's #NoPlaceForHate and every space must be safe, for everyone. #NationalHCAW (1/6) An image with a red background and a picture of a man with a A report by @GateHerts provides a rundown of the psychological impact of hate on Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people.

Many respondents stressed the corrosive
effect on mental health and wellbeing of hate speech and discrimination.

🔴Treated as 2nd-class citizens;
🔴Chased from pillar-to-post despite having nowhere to stop, thanks to 1994 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act;
🔴Locked into a cycle of trespass, evictions, race hate and discrimination.

WATCH📺: On Tuesday, @mwillersqc of @gardencourtlaw outlined to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill Committee the difficulty that will arise from the Bill's vague definitions and the potential no recourse to justice for Gypsies and Travellers. (1/5) On the vague terms, @mwillersqc said, "...the problem with Part 4 [of the Bill] and the speculation as to whether or not definitions will become crystallised in litigation is that most Gypsies and Travellers will have left the site and will be unable to challenge... Chair of @PoliceChiefs, Martin Hewitt, gave evidence yesterday to a parliamentary cmte scrutinising the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill.

Mr Hewitt said, "...Our point fundamentally, as the NPCC group, is that the issue here is the lack of [site] provision". (1/4) Thank you to @lizziedearden for this write-up on the National Police Chiefs Council view that new powers are not needed, but instead, we need increased provision of sites. (2/4)

.@mwillersqc "what the [Gov] are effectively doing in Part 4 of the Bill is creating...'no-go' zones which the Court of Appeal has ruled would fundamentally breach [Human Rights legislation]" Again, @mwillersqc, "A Gypsy or Traveller parking on land with their family is not going to hang around when threatened with seizure of their vehicle... &[if they tried to argue their case] they would probably not get Legal Aid to challenge...the Section and prosecution. For decades, the Government has failed to identify enough space for Travellers to live and now the Home Secretary is planning to jail, fine and remove the homes of innocent people for the ‘crime’ of having nowhere to go. (1/4) Against this backdrop, the Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities is handing out leaflets on “dealing with traveller incursions” to win votes at election time. The language is disgraceful, but the issue is so much more than language - it’s the whole approach. (2/4)

This is beyond unacceptable and utterly shameful.

Gypsies and Travellers are human beings. You cannot use Gypsy and Traveller people as a political football with which to score votes.
(1/8) Politics is already rife with anti-Traveller racism and for a 'Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities' to be doing this is completely beyond the pale.

To then argue that it was a case of not knowing what 'incursions' means is utterly baffling. (2/8)

On 8th March, @pritipatel stated in Parliament, “As of January 2020, the number of lawful Traveller sites increased by 41% from January 2010…”.

This is false. There has been an 8.4% decrease in local authority Traveller pitches 2010-20.

As you may have seen, the Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities released its report today. The conclusion being that there is no 'institutional racism'. (1/10)

This evening we're live tweeting developments from the parliamentary debate on the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, in particular in relation to the potential impacts of proposed new laws to imprison, fine and remove the homes of Gypsy, Traveller and nomadic people. The Home Secretary in her opening remarks states that she intends to back and support the police with the new bill - it is very clear that is not the case as most police don't want stronger powers for roadside camps and say more sites are needed:

Today we release 'Briefing on new police powers for roadside camps in the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill: Part 4'

Here's what you need to know:

🚫The measures outlined in the #PolicingBill will worsen inequalities already experienced by Gypsies and Travellers (1/n) 🚫The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill will needlessly push Gypsies and Travellers in to the criminal justice system

🚫The powers will disproportionately affect specific minority and ethnic communities and is likely to be in conflict with human rights legislation (2/n)

Morning all, you may have seen in the @Telegraph and @thetimes this morning that @pritipatel will shortly announce that it will make it a criminal offence to trespass with the intention of settling. 1/n
telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/01/1… The majority of people living on roadside camps have no place to stop because of Government failure to identify anywhere. @pritipatel's plans will therefore mean that people can be imprisoned and fined for the "crime" of having nowhere to live. 2/n

👉 Bring back pitch targets
👉 Ring-fence funding to build Traveller sites

As you may be aware, the Government is running a consultation on increasing police powers, or criminalising trespass.

We have laid out a guide on how to respond (with templates), here: gypsy-traveller.org/how-to-say-no-… (1/21) If you’re on mobile, you won’t be able to fill in any of the templates.

Instead, we recommend opening the Government form on one tab and following this Twitter thread, where we will lay out how to answer each question! (2/21)
