Watch for "cops save baby ducks" stories in the next few months. Media collaborates with police to produce these puff pieces after every police brutality incident.

Literally every dept does these after police killings, it's amazing. Thread
kron4.com/news/bay-area/… Drones spying on Alameda residents too controversial? Don't worry, they save baby ducks too!

One of interim DA Jenkins murder cases (before she quit) just went to trial: She wanted 1st degree murder, 25 to life. The jury could have also convicted on voluntary & involuntary manslaughter.

Jenkins sat in the front row today to hear the verdict. Not Guilty on all counts. This is a case she had worked up and prepared for trial. I don't know if there was an offer to settle, but at the time, she wanted the maximum. Instead, he is going home today.

What does this tell us about her "prosecutorial experience" she keeps highlighting? It's not good.

“That is why we need an independent district attorney, unafraid to tackle the difficult issues facing the city, and take on the people in power, who have been putting their own interests ahead of the rest of us,” Hamasaki said.
sfchronicle.com/election/artic… "Hamasaki zeroed in on the district attorney’s appointment by Breed, painting Jenkins as another acolyte in an administration that has failed to make a dent in the city’s persistent challenges with drug use, mental health and homelessness."

Los Angeles is a warning sign of the politicization of policing, using armed police to silence dissent.

We are seeing the same politics from the interim District Attorney of San Francisco firing & demoting all the deputy DAs prosecuting crimes by police. latimes.com/california/sto… The interim DA removed everyone holding police accountable and replaced them with a political hire. And then continued at least one major case, the police killing of Keita O'Neil, until after the election.

Which is what you'd do if you were trying to run as a progressive, but..

Here's the problems with the latest press release. 1. DAs in the office didn't know about this the press release. The people who are going to implement it, got it from the news, just like you.

The bigger problem is this is just the War on Drugs 2.0. sfchronicle.com/sf/article/S-F… 2. Treatment for people suffering from drug addiction, that sounds great! This isn't that. What this does is ramps up policing of people struggling with addiction.

The cases go to Community Justice Court (CJC), which seems good. Except this does nothing to provide treatment.

Her response was unclear on pending cases against SF police — all of which are reportedly being reviewed or delayed since Jenkins took office.

Jenkins has also fired or demoted all of the prosecutors who were previously working on those cases.
missionlocal.org/2022/09/brooke… Why are cases involving crimes by police officers different? If you are going to be "tough-on-crime" doesn't that include ALL crime?

Why remove seasoned prosecutors and replace them with someone who believes police cases should be handled differently?

I want to talk a bit about why I jumped into this race to be San Francisco's next District Attorney just 12 days ago.

Like many of you, I hoped the interim DA would put the people first, not politics. That hasn't happened.
So let’s talk about who I am and why I'm running: I came to San Francisco 28 years ago seeking refuge from the anti-Asian bullying and harassment that defined my childhood and youth. Those experiences made me the person I am today.

I know what it is like to feel unsafe - as DA I want to help make this city safer for everyone.

I've been speaking with police reform leaders over the last few days since SFPD announced they would no longer accept oversight by prosecutors - the consensus is that this is an unprecedented attack on fundamental principles of oversight & accountability.
sfchronicle.com/sf/article/S-F… Although this is being framed as an attack on DA Boudin, the real target is the slow and incremental progress we have made on reforming the institution of policing in San Francisco - reforms that the police union have fought every step of the way. It's about the culture.

Amir Locke was asleep on the couch under the covers, when police entered at the crack of dawn. Just waking, hearing a commotion, he grabs a firearm, but does not point it at officers. Police open fire, killing him. Not target of warrant, gun legal. Dead.
washingtonpost.com/national/activ… Police used a no-knock warrant, opened up and began screaming at dude. At first review, this is looking worse than Breonna Taylor, in that gun was never pointed, no shots fired, they just waste the dude half-asleep on the couch. Remember all the "reforms" we were promised?

Another police union hit-job on DA Chesa Boudin blows up on goofball recallers. This was their big "gotcha" moment - Chesa didn't charge the guy who police beat mercilessly for a prior potential DV incident! Oops, that mayoral appointee Loftus, again. davisvanguard.org/2022/02/judge-… "The police department never forwarded the case for domestic violence and Suzy Loftus declined to file charges the police did forward on resisting arrest (PC §148) by the man who was beaten by Officer Stangel, Dacari Spiers." Not the police union wants this to be an issue.

I wanted to check a few things before commenting on this, but more and more this is looking like a right-wing op. This has been blasted out as a baseball attack on an Asian elder, a hate crime ignored! Seems like DDK fell for that narrative, which is looking increasingly false. (1) First of all, what Mr. Le's advocates hid from the media when promoting the story was that the "baseball bat" was actually a children's toy, a plastic bat. The media was just told baseball bat, so we all imagined a vicious attack with a wooden or metal bat - not a kid's toy.

DoorDash just paid "$5.3 million to settle allegations with San Francisco that it stiffed almost 4,500 delivery workers of the city’s mandated health care coverage and paid sick leave." Stealing from the most vulnerable workers, Ryan, that cool with you? sfchronicle.com/sf/article/Doo… DoorDash isn't some first-time offender out on low bail, they have a long record of stealing, not handbags, but millions from their workers. Ryan thinks that's okay, cause, hey, it's just regular poor and working people. It's not, everyone has a right to work and be paid fairly.

I posted on Veterans Day about how much the criminal courts deal with veterans who have served this country, but return with high rates of PTSD, substance use, and other mental health issues. This veteran was shot multiple times during his service and now killed during episode. Not commenting on the shooting itself, just the tragedy many veterans face on return from serving our country. And how much defense attorney have to fight to get them help and struggle for resources. A lot of social work in defense work.

My reply guys seem very confused about what I do, so quick explainer! (1) My job is a criminal defense attorney, I represent people investigated and charged by the gov't (including many tech folks!). (2) I'm a SF police commissioner, I sit in an oversight capacity over SFPD. I love my day job, I get to help people in some of the toughest points in their lives. Some people have done pretty bad stuff, but it's not my role to sit in judgment. To anyone sh**ting on this, I promise you, I will one day represent someone you care about, and you will get it.
