Freelancers!
It's the time we're all freaking out about self assessment tax returns, which means it's time for my now annual (and updated) thread about how it's not actually that bad. Here are some things that should help:
1. First up: if you were freaking out about the government's Making Tax Digital scheme (requiring quarterly filing) coming in next year, don't worry: it's been delayed til 2026 at the earliest. Thank f*ck.
So the Tories have driven govt debt over 2 trillion pounds for the first time *ever*. Govt debt is not necessarily a bad thing - but given that the last ten years has been a brutal austerity drive of selling off public assets and cutting public services, where is the money going?
It is a good idea for govts to borrow in recessions, to invest back into the economy through expanded public services and community investment / job creation. So short term govt debt is not a bad idea. But the Tories have been doing the opposite of that, but borrowing *more*.
