I didn't say this in last night's episode because I hadn't rewatched the match yet.

I have now.

United were the better team in that first half by a wide margin in terms of tactical execution.

My panic meter was at like a 4/10 yesterday, it's now at a 1. Why it was good:
- Press was good
- Rest defence was good
- Lots of energy from the forwards
Why it was bad:
- Bad performances with the ball from Shaw, Bruno, Garnacho, Antony and Casemiro
- Bad decision making with the ball
- Casemiro positional mistakes
- Lack of box threat

I'm very attached to Scouted for a lot of reasons - it was one of the things that made me interested in football analysis, it was the first publication to ask me to write for them, and the guys who run it are all 11/10 people who could not be more genuine... I'm assuming most of you following me know them - good, you know how awesome this thing they do is. To those of you who may not - what they're planning here is awesome and you should go be a part of it, not only because the product is awesome, but also because more stuff...

gonna do a weird little thread cuz I keep seeing United fans talk about jurriën timber when ten hag first used timber and lisandro as a centreback pairing I'm not gonna lie I thought it was a bad idea

This isnt the only issue with Uniteds midfield, but 1 thing that played a big hand in their inability to maintain possession during Brighton's 25 min blitz on Sunday was that their mfs cannot turn a man and run on the ball. Instead they do this: unproductive 1 touch passes This isn't a problem as a one off. You can't do what Frenkie does in the quoted clip every time, and sometimes you don't have your wits about you so you go backwards when your back is to goal. But none of Fred, Bruno, and McTominay can comfortably receive like this...

Okay so I'm going to go through this thread and just do some quick hit thoughts on what it all means This is the second straight year I've done this wherein I've found Wan-Bissaka is making more mistakes than any other defender in the side. This year I have him making even more positional errors than last...

Attempting to generate an evidence based explanation as to why Manchester United have the 13th best defence in the Premier League based on expected goals conceded [THREAD] Why This Thread Exists: We don't have good, publicly available defensive metrics. That may change in the future with tracking data, but, for now, all we have is our eyes. However, the issue with our eyes is that human memories are fallible: we have biases, and as a result we...

I've tweeted this before, but I really think with United's last 3 managers there's a fundamental assumption that all of them have inherited tactically from an earlier time in football: your opponents will ~make~ mistakes, so you don't have to force mistakes, you can just wait Van Gaal and Mourinho had very different means of going about this (and they're some of the great thinkers of the game, so they adapted to some extent from this), but when confronted with teams far more drilled and structured than those that they met earlier in their careers...

One of those teams had one of the greatest sets of attacking options ever, and the other did not. Calling them very stylistically different is inaccurate imo, even if the defence was much improved for his second league title. If he went to United (he won't so this is all moot) he'd play high fullbacks and inside forwards, and they'd cross a lot. There would be lots of counter attacking goals. I also suspect there would be more frustrating away days to Burnley. This is not an enigmatic manager.

Manager replacements can get broken down a lot of different ways, but how I see it they fall into three categories -

Sexy and Good
Unsexy and Good
Bad The sexy and good options in the context of United are your Ten Hag's and your Potters. They're fun and young but are mildly risky in their own ways. I think, unfortunately, they're also deeply unlikely.

We're going over... every run I can find from Martial and Cavani in this match. Let's go [1/?] 5': Martial starts in an offsides position here, and, that may seem bad, but this is actually what you're looking for more of from him. On the shoulder, attempting to exploit inefficiencies in the offsides trap. Maguire opts instead for Rashford, though, who is onside.

It's a viz thread but make it small sample 2020/21 Season

[yes the badges are back, the bright colors less so] Some of you may remember Net Possession Contributions. I once thought this was a good way to quantify a player's affect on the turnover battle (as it is dubbed in American Football and should probably be discussed more in our beloved Football). I now feel that this view... Image

A thread on Anthony Martial's strengths and weaknesses: Anthony Martial has been a hotly debated Premier League player for half a decade now. It was only this season, however, that he settled into his favored centre forward role for the first time in his career. The results were encouraging

Rewatching from yesterday, this is a clip where we won the ball to score the first goal. This is sort of a microcosm of what's wrong with our press. Super intense, but lacking organization. Bruno should be pressing the man in the bottom of the frame who just took the throw in... instead Rashford pulls over to do it, which is ultimately effective, but just as easily couldve been played out of if he'd just found the man Rashford abandons
