The descendent of Palestinian Christians, Bukele began his political career as Mayor of Nuevo Cuscatlán; a small town outside San Salvador. During his term, he slashed homicide rates by 97%, enacted a scheme of meritocratic scholarships, and built new roads to nearby towns.
