Hey, since a number of you are new here following me on this dystopic hell site, you may eventually share something about shitty media that I post and have someone slide up into your mentions like "oh yeah let me tell you about that guy."
That person is a cop, but I figure I'll save them the trouble of stalking me and save you the trouble of wondering if they're full of shit: they're not, at least not completely. Like James Gunn, I've said some magnificently stupid and shitty things on the internet years ago.
Also, created some regrettable stuff as an artist I would not sign my name to these days. I have apologized for the shitty posts, grown away from the insensitive art, and tried mightily to do better in the years since.
so the person writing V5's safety appendix did some tweets earlier this year defending the practice of industry people using conventions as hookup opportunities with fans and freelance hopefuls. that's neat.
also apparently claimed I was lying about WW mandating alterations to my Changing Ways draft (too bad the book's developer, who does not like me these days, independently confirmed that I was telling the truth-- whoops)
at this point I legitimately can't tell if V5 is operating out of malice, incompetence, or suffering from some kind of monkey's paw curse, and I've honestly kind of stopped caring which it is because the results are the same no matter what
Our adult cat who came down with pancreatitis has had basically no appetite for three days now and is going back to see the vet in the morning. I am currently at the absolute limit of what I can spend on vet bills. I am terrified. He's my best friend.
"This is not a game for the faint of heart. Even experienced game masters should think long and hard about before bringing it to the table." --Polygon's writeup of their V5 playtest with the game's producer, Jason Carl
This is VtM one of the biggest mainstream games in the hobby
Only now it appears to be Lamentations of the Chicago Prince
I mean, this isn't like, the staff of Polygon cracked the book open at their office and things got weird, this is a guided tour playtest run by THE GAME'S PRODUCER specifically for Polygon. This is how White Wolf chose to present it to the gaming press.
It seems dumb but one of the most common Rubicons people who think of themselves as good, egalitarian, progressive, etc don't want to cross is language clean-up: "It's a joke, lighten up." I think the usual response, "That's not funny," is ineffective and misdirected. Here's why:
People won't generally be moved from an established position by an argument or criticism that doesn't make sense to them, and "that's not funny" doesn't make sense because, bluntly, exploitative humor often IS funny. The human laugh reflex doesn't have strong ethics.
George Carlin's joke about Porky Pig raping Daffy Duck had me in stitches the first time I heard it. 50 million people a day laugh at someone eating shit on a dirt bike on Youtube. Incongruities or false congruities amuse the human brain.
really amazed that with the original EIC taking over and 'saving' the Escapist from being a gator shithole, their very first announcement is... almost perfectly calculated to appeal to gators and put everyone else's back way up.
Film Robert now saying "look at the history & credentials of everyone involved," and okay, sure, but a first impression of incompetence and media illiteracy a ton better than open malice?
also if that crusted asshole Yahtzee is still there, then the Escapist is still a site that's happy to let evil squat in its front yard and shit on the walkway, which bodes ill for any forums or comment sections
Hospitalized feral kitten update: The kitten has hookworms. This is treatable and he should be able to pull through if there's nothing else wrong with the little guy. We'll be picking him up in ~2 hours. Final bill is gonna be $567. Any help is divine.
Update: kitten took a bad turn this afternoon, is running a high fever. Antibiotics have been administered and they want further IV treatment and monitoring tomorrow. Bill is now close to $800. I am reaching out to people but, yeah, this is scary.
Gonna be sitting up with the kitten tonight, feeding it and taking care of it. Vet gives it 50/50 odds. Kitten's a fighter and so am I; going to try to help it tilt those odds in its favor any way I can.
It makes me sick to do this right after people have just been so generous but I got a deathly ill feral kitten I am trying to save today. It's at the vet's right now being given fluids while they run tests. Bill estimated somewhere between $480-700.
Its three siblings have died over the last few days of I don't know what. Buried one of them yesterday morning. Saw the last of the litter staggering around the driveway last night, with his mother refusing to feed him.
I just... I can't let an animal begging for help just die in front of me. The world is awful and cruel, but not in front of my own two eyes. Not if I can do -anything- to try to stop it. So we took him in overnight, gave him a saucer of kitten formula.
Ideally you want to do this for your community-driven IP -before- a giant PR meltdown and having your brand infested by the alt-right but better late than never I guess. Not holding my breath but it would be nice if they engage this seriously.
Tbh, this makes me nervous.
First off, because I'm still not seeing active curation of spaces they already control (like their own Facebook comments). Second, because this message focuses on messaging-control, branding-control, and product promotion rather than actually managing communities.
That's not to say they won't or can't engage in community curation, but such efforts aren't what this post puts front and center.
This whitewashes Zak and paints a noncommittal "both sides are bad" weasel-answer as affirmative support for anti-fascism. It also contains several falsehoods (Ken Hite himself defended the "triggered" thing as non-problematic when it was first spotted). This is rank apologia.
I'd be delighted to discover they've finally gotten spooked bad enough to drop the edge-driven marketing, but if that's the case, it won't show up until the 2nd round of supplements. V5 is already off to the printers, it's fucked.
I'm going to say this and then bow out of this discussion because it has escalated way past my (nonexistent) pay grade:
DO NOT HASSLE ANYONE MENTIONED. DO NOT HASSLE ANYONE _PERIOD._
Dog claims to have received at least one email (a legal threat) that did not originate with its alleged sender. I would not take anything else sent to him at face value, either.
I don't have the resources to interrogate his allegations and neither does anyone reading this.
I -do- know freelancers have been receiving harassment as a result of his article and I am going to be livid if that intensifies because of this. Don't try to sleuth out who he's talking about, or who might be behind any false messages. This is not the wild west.
So. I try to be clear, honest, and specific when I talk about things, but sometimes I'm vague or circular about names when I discuss industry shit. It's not that I don't think people should know these things, but there are responsible and careless ways of releasing information.
Once you hit a certain social media size the tragedy of the commons kicks in. If just 1 in 100 of your follows thinks "I'm gonna tell that guy the shit he said or did is no bueno," without ever considering that to be harassment?
In my case, that would mean 43 randos materializing out of thin air to yell at somebody. Even at 1 in 500, that's still 8 angry dudes jumping into their mentions. That's not something I want to do to anyone who isn't locking babies in cages or repping for GG.
so @root_of_all_eli noticed this in the V5 playtest and uhm. That's... "unfortunate" would be the charitable interpretation.
So there are three possible interpretations. Worst: It's exactly what it looks like.
Second worst: Someone is playing silly buggers, deploying 4chan "humor," not realizing how deadly serious people are with their mad-on at what White Wolf's doing, or that in 2018 the world has zero patience left to distinguish Nazis from people playing Nazi for laughs.
@TheSteelShep@grammatonninja@thedicedog They sure did. I wrote that chapter for Onyx Path. The stuff about werewolves using rituals, silver, and will to do body mods for religious or decorative purposes? I wrote all that.
@TheSteelShep@grammatonninja @thedicedog The transphobic shit got added in development without my knowledge, after I turned my drafts in, by demand of White Wolf. They pre-emptively banned me from their forums so I couldn't denounce that shit as not my writing.
@TheSteelShep@grammatonninja @thedicedog They also added in a bunch of gross anti-abortion and antivaxxer shit to my stuff too, while they were at it.
White Wolf's current line is "we are unflinchingly depicting the real darkness of the world, NOT trying to court the worst of humanity as our new customer base," but the worst of humanity is seething in the comments of everything they post. This was not unforeseeable.
People with 10, 20, 30 years of experience in the RPG industry told them, from the day Martin Ericsson did his first magazine interview not long after Paradox purchased the White Wolf IP, that he was playing with fire and he was going to burn down Vampire if he kept on like that.
They've been warned, talked to, begged on hands and knees, from people who know what they're doing, who shepherded this IP through its greatest triumphs and most catastrophic fuck-ups, not to do what they've been doing.
While work on NECROMANCY continues, it's become clear that it's a big game with a shitload of bespoke moving parts that's gonna take a good while to finish, and I need short-term creative income in the meantime. So I'm working on a thing I can whack together in a few weeks.
So: In THE RENFIELD DIARIES you play the servants of a vampire, given a portion of your master's power with which to carry out their bidding during the day and in the places they can't or won't go.
You'll engage in espionage against rival vampires, raid ancient tombs to retrieve lost vampire artifacts, and do last-minute Christmas shopping because your asshole master hasn't had to run their own errands since 1913 and doesn't understand what the holiday rush is like.
the big thing I learned working on Exalted is that 'feel' is both nebulous and also the most important thing about an RPG
also despite being nebulous it's your job as a designer to figure it out, run it down, identify its working parts, and design to support it.
Or you could have a functional yet bland-feeling game. Up to you.
Actually that tweet came off a little snide. There's a big, big place for "fuck it, it works" in the hobby, especially when you want to do something like homebrew your own Mass Effect campaign without spending months getting it set up. Fate is the all-time king for this.
rip harlan ellison, he abused a bunch of women and also wrote some words. your feelings about his passing are valid.
it's okay to be relieved when someone who made the world more dangerous for you or people like you leaves it. it's okay to be angry at seeing their crimes erased so their accomplishments-- the accomplishments those crimes denied to others-- can be celebrated
it's also okay to be sad when a problematic or downright shitty creator dies. Good stories, things that mean something when we encounter them, they find a place to live in us, and when their creator passes, it's like a part of us gets touched by death.
An idea that I first encountered in Frank Herbert's DUNE and have rarely seen repeated elsewhere is that the data you have can never be more useful to you than the screen you have to project it against. This is a wonderful way of understanding context.
Think of your favorite movie, up there on the big screen: A crisp white sheet, clear, built for this purpose. Now imagine you don't have that, and instead you're trying to watch it outdoors, projected against a stand of pine trees. Nearly incomprehensible.
In the real world we have very few (possibly zero) crisp white sheets to project data against, although we often think we have a lot of them, because we're accustomed to the comfortable and familiar distortion we see the most.
Someone should probably tell the rich that workers banding together to present formal address of grievances is the alternative we worked out a long time ago to breaking down the factory owner's front door and beating him to death in front of his family? I feel like they forgot.
Alternately we could just go ahead and start killing them again, I'm also fine with that at this point. Running Elon Musk down his own assembly line with all the safety features turned off would probably do some good for the world.
The Romans had this shit worked out a long time ago. They did the whole bread and circuses thing because the plebs had a WELL-DOCUMENTED tendency to start killing and occasionally eating Senators when they got sufficiently up against the wall and pissed off about it.
Video game culture is a toxic swamp that will apologize infinitely for racism and misogyny, full stop, and this will remain the case until its top influencers begin treating such behavior as unacceptable.
Let's talk about 2009 and the fighting game community for a minute!
So the first thing to understand about the fighting game community (FGC) is that it significantly predates eSports as an organized competitive gaming community, and is still to this day a weird independent grassroots thing, and it is VERY good at being that.
Partly this is because there have always been passionate members of the community willing to shoulder the work of organizing tournaments and handling infrastructure for competition for sheer love of the game. Partly it's because a few of those people happen to be millionaires.
