Growing up as a naturalized U.S. citizen I always thought being in America was a privilege. Americans were open and free and easygoing. They wore blue jeans and were affable and tolerant. That’s what my parents thought at least. (A thread...) A German and a Jordanian they lived in North Dakota as my father finished his PhD. The other students & neighbors welcomed them. They bundled up against the freezing winters and felt lucky to be there.
