The problem is that appreciation of music is subjective (personal preferences are not influenced by mainstream success), but commidification of music is objective. Sales, charts, and critical acceptance are universally tied to tangible factors. (1/5) Therefore, definition of “best” changes according to which target you are looking to hit (general appreciation or specific commidification). Without a defined framework, “best” has no meaning. Since I see a lot of social media personalities jumping on the Prince Estate/Morris Day news because it's trendy (and not because they are aware of the history or bc they have worked on these sorts of IP battles btwn estates, labels and artists); I suppose *I* should weigh in. 😬 First up for the "Prince would be ashamed of them!" crowd... just an introductory FYI:

The man himself battled w Morris over the usage of "The Time" name. This is the reason the name "The Original 7ven" came to be.

However, it's a nuanced discussion!

You may know me as the creator, writer, and curator of #Princerversaries; but I've been a part of the music, media and entertainment biz since the late 90s. I've worked at a plethora of record labels (Arista, Jive, Universal, Motown, Republic + more). I've also worked at MTV + a couple PR agencies. Throughout the years, I've been blessed to work on everything from studio sessions to sample clearance contracts and publicity campaigns.

From what I understand, things have been a little off-kilter in the Prince community as of late, in regards to infringement threats. I know it started w the treatment of the PR/First Ave tribute vid (which disappointed me greatly), but it has since grown. Here’s my take... I could talk for 7 hours about my full thoughts on the situation, but the short answer is: it’s complicated. Lol. Posthumous tributes to him, where no one is selling music/videos/movies illegally should be acceptable. Even if you think HE would’ve had it taken down. Here’s why...
