While many may think ICE is a relatively young agency, tying its origins to the events of 9/11, its history traces back to when the nation's founding fathers were establishing the blueprint for the newly created United States of America. In 1787, the Federalist Papers called for what became the Tariff Act, which led to development of the U.S. Treasury Department. In 1875, the Division of Customs was created in the Treasury Department and 53 years later, the Bureau of Customs was formed.

Yesterday marked the 26th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide of the Bosnian War. ICE has investigated and removed numerous perpetrators and accomplices involved in these war crimes, with support from ICE’s Human Rights Violators and War Crimes Center, including: Milan Trisic, who served in one of the military units responsible for the genocide, was prosecuted for making false claims in order to receive legal status in the U.S. and removed by ICE in 2019. This week, ICE removed 39 detainees to Somalia. Nearly all had criminal histories, including murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, rape, solicitation of a minor, sexual assault on a minor, fleeing a peace officer, indecent exposure, drug trafficking, and DWI.
