04 NEW MALAYSIA: DEMOCRACY, INTERRUPTED? - PART IV

[THREAD]

PART I :

PART II :

PART III : Image *REMEDIES*

"The death of democracy is not likely to be an assassination from ambush. It will be a slow extinction from apathy, indifference, and undernourishment."

- Robert M. Hutchins (1899-1977)

In this informative and illuminating article, erudite and prolific novelist @MohdFaizalMusa1 puts aside his literary cap and draws upon his considerable experience as a researcher and social commentator, to expound on the thorny and polarising issue of unethical conversions. Loh Siew Hong bertanya mengapa dia tidak dibenarkan berjumpa dengan anak-anak perempuannya sedangkan kebenaran diberi kepada Mufti Perlis, Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin.

It is my personal opinion that no organisation which publishes an article devoted entirely to espousing "Sisi Lembut Seorang Hitler" should be given a first look, never mind a second chance, especially when its co-founder has advocated for political assassinations and pogroms. I am appalled and disgusted by the fact that, in this day and age, there are those who still attempt to "humanise" an evil monster who not only took the lives of 6 million Jews and other minorities, but also stripped them of whatever remnants of dignity they possessed beforehand.

Also, this:

Ethnoreligious tribalists are fond of using the word "libtard" as a pejorative slur to address those whom they consider to be "liberal" in a contemptuous and condescending manner. Many do not even realise that they are being disrespectful to two groups of people. For adults and children who suffer from mental illness through no fault of their own, life is already challenging even in the best of times.

They do not need, nor do they deserve, to be further vilified, stigmatised, marginalised or ostracised.

SPIRITUALITY VS PERFORMATIVE PIETY

[THREAD]

While spirituality can be regarded as the distilled essence of religion, performative piety is nothing more than the ostentatious, narcissistic, hollow, crass and disingenuous manifestation of religiosity*. (*excessive or overzealous religiousness; self-indulgent and self-conceited religious behaviour, often practised and expressed in a manner that is intrusive, patronising, peremptory and annoying)

To my fellow countrymen who think that the disgraced former Prime Minister and convicted felon should be given a second chance, I can only offer the following words of advice:

"Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me."

economist.com/asia/2021/11/2… WHO, AT THE time, did not see the resounding defeat in 2018 of the scandal-drenched prime minister, Najib Razak, and his United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) as a watershed for Malaysia?

'EMPTY CHAIRS AT EMPTY TABLES'* : AN EULOGY FOR MALAYSIA'S BROKEN DREAMS AND SHATTERED ASPIRATIONS

"Here they talked of revolution
Here it was they lit the flame

Also, security experts have warned that Malaysia is now exposed to the risk of terrorist attacks by Isis, due to the recent explicit praise and support of PAS for the Taliban, which the former considers its sworn enemy.

This is what happens when a patriarchal, parochial and primeval mentality, often aided and abetted by male chauvinism and/or misogyny, has infiltrated and embedded itself within the subconscious of some Malaysians. These men expect women to be subservient, even if our FC guarantees equality for all before the law. That they should base their self-worth - partially or otherwise - on this subservience, whether voluntary or coerced, says quite a lot about their character (or lack thereof).

And so, just as hastily as it had been stitched together, the morally illegitimate and constitutionally questionable PN government unraveled at breakneck speed, and finally met its ignominious end on 16 August, 2021. Unlike the fall of the kleptocratic BN regime on 9 May 2018, the demise of this government has not been met with joyous celebrations or rapturous responses from the citizenry.

As Malaysia struggles to recover from potentially debilitating political, economic and public health crises, following the collapse of the PN government, @1AmyChew trails her top-notch investigative spotlight on the foreign investment sector to survey the damage it has sustained. Standfirst:

• Analysts say with no clear successor as prime minister, Muhyiddin’s decision to step down will further roil the country’s financial markets and dampen investors’ confidence

We should not be that surprised to find ourselves in our current predicament. The writing has been on the wall for years. Our transition from a one party state system to a two coalition system did not happen overnight. This gradual change took the best part of 10 years. It commenced with the emergence of a credible and formidable opposition bloc in GE12, continued with the abandonment of MCA and MIC by the non-Malays, in tandem with the widening fragmentation of the Malay political polity, and culminated with the fall of BN In GE14.

The Srebrenica War Memorial not only serves as a commemorative focal point for the Bosniak genocide and the final resting place for many of its victims, but also as a damning indictment of man's inhumanity to man.

"The UN court upheld the life sentence for his role in the killing of around 8,000 Bosnian Muslim (Bosniak) men and boys in Srebrenica in 1995."
