The Senate Judiciary Committee is currently hearing SB 12. The bill would remove a legal defense for schools and libraries if they're accused of sharing harmful material with minors. An amendment being offered by Chairwoman Brown would establish a complaint and appeals process. It would also require school libraries to publish a list of all materials on its website or a hardcopy.

The House Education Committee is meeting this morning to hear five bills. Agenda: iga.in.gov/static-documen… The committee is first hearing HB 1447. The bill contains language that addresses third-party surveys, analyses and evaluations for students. Schools would be required to contact parents at least twice to opt-out.

The Senate Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee is now hearing SB 398. The bill would divert community-based public school property tax revenue to charter schools. As introduced, traditional public schools would lose an estimated $70 million each year. An amendment adopted requires charter schools to establish education and operations funds. There are other changes to the distribution of tax revenue to charters in the amendment which will impact the fiscal impact to traditional public schools.

iga.in.gov/static-documen… The first bill being heard is SB 82. The bill would require all seniors to complete the FAFSA, with some exceptions if waived by a parent or principal/counselor due to extenuating circumstances. The requirement wouldn't apply to private schools.

The Senate Education Committee meeting is underway. Chairman Raatz says that more than 200 people have signed up to testify on HB 1134. He says he will only take about two hours of testimony. Chaiman Raatz also announces that he will now NOT be holding a vote today on HB 1134. He will hold the bill for further small tweaks, but intends to vote on Sen. Rogers' amendment today.

The House Education Committee is having its first meeting of the session this morning. The committee is hearing two bill listed as priorities for the House Republican caucus, HB 1001 (ILEARN hold harmless) and HB 1002 (teacher evaluations). The committee continues to be chaired by Rep. Bob Behning, R - Indianapolis. Chairman Behning says the committee will again meet on Wednesdays this session, but is meeting today to pass out HB 1001 as soon as possible.

The Senate education committee will be starting any minute. For new bills being heard today, we will be particularly watching HB 1629 and HB 1004.
