DeSantis is the first major contender to be what we have most been fearing for the past 6 years: a less insane, more disciplined and systematic American Viktor Orban than Donald Trump, Still relitigating 2020, was capable of being. Therefore, even more insidious and dangerous As long as Trump is fixated on 2020, he’s not a viable candidate for president in 2024. Even most of his followers won’t want to hear endless diatribes about that. This is the GOP leadership’s bind: they’re stuck with him because of his popularity but they know he can’t win.

Trump fans don't understand that we aren't simply appalled by his politics, but that he is such a downright bad person. They don't care, because he's their champion, their son of a bitch, but he really is just a terrible human being. They like that, but we don't. It does matter. In conversation, I have no doubt they would argue that Biden, Obama, the Clintons and other Democrats are just as bad, or at least also bad people. But it's really not true. Among major political figures, Trump is uniquely appalling. We've never had such a vile bastard in office.

A quick thread summarizing the basic aspects of the Trump anti-peace plan:
1) Palestinians get the trappings of statehood but no state whatsoever
2) Israel will maintain all security control, including over coastal waters, airspace, electromagnetic spectrum and everything. 3) Palestinians must recognize Israel as a "Jewish state" without any definition of what that means legally or practically
4) Israel will annex all settlements, the Jordan Valley and other areas in perpetuity, Palestinians there not entitled to Israeli citizenship nonetheless

So, either Turkey & Saudi Arabia have done a deal, or Riyadh is trying to convince everyone that they have done a deal. Here is the progression: (1/4) 1) Erdogan gives a speech in which he pointedly doesn't mention MBS, is very respectful towards King Salman, and doesn't refer at all to the audio recording that is supposedly Turkey's ace in the hole.
