Sternsingen is an old tradition, mostly in central European countries. But over the course of the last few years there's been severe criticism of this custom because of Blackfacing, similar to Zwarte Piet in the Netherlands. Let me attempt to give some context.

🧵(1/13) In Austria, the Catholic Youth (CY) coordinates over 85.000 people who go Sternsingen and raise money for humanitarian projects around January 6th. I interviewed the spokesperson for the styrian CY for my latest DOVE-podcast episode and the issue of Blackfacing came up.
