A final comment following reaction to my LRB essay last week, mostly for Free Church folk who know me, and with apologies if you’re not into ultra-niche Scottish ecclesiastical history & micro-politics. 1/🧵 Part of my argument is that what gets excused as ‘social conservatism’ is simply political conservatism; that it encompasses a lot that needs to be seen in daylight; and, yes, I think this is relevant to the SNP leadership contest. 2/

Given that @GeorgeMonbiot and I both thought to write winter vibe-killing articles about wood-burning stoves, I think we agree on some things. But there’s a fair bit of disagreement, not least over the data. 🧵 I don’t think it’s true to say “Though only 8% of households in the UK … have a wood-burning stove, they release more small particulates … than all the vehicles on the road”

It’s a red letter day in @EdinGeography: the last undergraduate lecture of Professor Charles W.J. Withers FBA, FRSE, Geographer Royal for Scotland etc.

Charlie’s giving it dressed as Darth Vader. Can’t explain, but brace for tweets. For those unfamiliar with Charlie, he is a distinguished historical geographer and historian of science who until retirement holds the Ogilvie Chair of Geography at @GeosciencesEd.
