OK, came upon another remarkable sign-stealing story. In 1923, apparently, Branch Rickey as manager of the Cardinals came up with a full system for stealing catcher signs and relaying those signs to hitters. It's unclear how he did it, but it was apparently effective 1/ Rickey wanted Rogers Hornsby to take part in the scheme. Hornsby was perhaps the most unlikable player in baseball history and was not above cheating, but he wanted nothing to do with this. He told Rickey to leave him alone. 2/
