In case you haven’t noticed, there’s a tremendous amount of COVID now. Hospitalizations are up almost 17%. The good news is that the updated vaccine is quite effective at preventing severe disease (60%). Older vaccinations and infection offer no protection. A few years ago I took a group of fellows and residents to see an old patient of mine who had been admitted to the hospital. I wanted to show them a physical exam finding I was pretty sure they had never seen before and would likely never see again. 1/ They probably assumed I was going to have them listen to an unusual heart murmur, but when we entered the room I asked the patient to roll up his sleeve. I wanted them to meet this extraordinary man & see the number tattooed on his forearm when he arrived in Auschwitz in 1944. 2/

When asked about the CDC today the president should have said that no one could have predicted that 25% of adults would refuse to get vaccinated and also refuse to vaccinate their kids.
