The idea that prioritising cars somehow provides people with more choice is the biggest misconception in transport. Instead, making it easier to drive sets off three distinct vicious cycles that lock in more car use and *less* choice 🧵 https://t.co/LgqRDzHSBd
1) More cars on the roads make it more dangerous to walk or cycle. As more people choose to drive instead, "safety in numbers" is lost and drivers are less aware of people walking/cycling. People become less fit and active travel becomes harder, all contributing to more car use

A few months ago, errors were found in national data on minor road traffic, leading to a big revision. Opponents of LTNs argue the data now shows there’s no problem to solve. The thing is, if you dig deeper, it seems that claim is no more credible than the original [THREAD 1/12] Image So what is this data? It’s from the Department for Transport, and is essentially estimates based on a series of actual roadside counts of the number of vehicles passing [2/12]

Last week the new London Plan was formally published and will now guide what new buildings get built where. To celebrate, here's a quick spin through the published evidence behind my personal favourite policy... Residential car parking [Thread 1/7] Image The London Plan's policies on car parking are integral to a world leading approach to transport. Transport and land use planning come together to create virtuous cycles of sustainable travel, vibrant town centres and more new homes [2/7] Image

Earlier this year I tried and failed to find a visually-engaging, non-technical video that quickly summarised what Climate Change will mean for our day-to-day lives. So I decided to make one. Here’s what I found [THREAD 1/11] Firstly, Climate Change is not a prospect any of us really want to face. If we don’t come to terms with this first, it’s too easy to dismiss the risks, think it’s someone else’s problem or that there’ll be a technological fix [2/11]

This may have slipped under the radar, but TfL have published loads of data on pre-COVID travel trends, split by borough. Here are a few of the most revealing stats on public transport use, the challenge to shift walk and cycle and the impacts cars have on our streets [1/9] In 6 boroughs, over 60% of people commuting do so by public transport (Haringey, Lewisham, Newham, Wandsworth, Greenwich and Waltham Forest). Over 100,000 London Underground trips are made per day by residents of Camden, Lambeth and Newham [2/9]

It's been a hell of a few months for transport. The idea of low traffic neighbourhoods - allowing access by car but not rat running - has really taken off. To help explain the context in different areas, TfL have just released the ‘Strategic Neighbourhoods Analysis’ [THREAD 1/7] Firstly, it sets some basic context, like how many people live in each neighbourhood and how many live without a car [2/7] ImageImage
